Welp. The train is stopped. In the middle of nowhere. Is that good?

Are you an actor in a horror movie?

Sure, if you're a fan of suspense films.

I was on a cross-country Amtrak many years ago. We stopped in the middle of a cornfield in Indiana. Soon after the train was surrounded by police and ambulances. It turned out that three people in one of the sleeper cars had OD’d on eightballs and died. It’s probably nothing that dramatic though.

Sounds better than Musicology Duck's saga about the bus that would *not* stop.

Unless you are on the Polar Express, the answer to that question is no, generally speaking.

I dunno — stopping in the middle of nowhere didn’t turn out so well in “The Grand Budapest Hotel”…

You're either in a murder mystery, or horror film

Per federal law, Amtrak has right of way on the tracks. However, there are no sidings on any rail line anywhere in the country long enough to hold a 12,000+ foot train. So you may just be waiting for a long freight to pass because there’s physically no other option.

Depends on who rides with you.

You okay?❣️

Kavenaugh stop?

It Depends

Did you feel a sudden jolt and smell smoke? If not there’s a good chance your train *didn’t* just hit a car. (Mine did once, stranding me in bumfuck nowhere between Fresno and SF for hours)

Seconding "probably waiting for freight traffic to move on".

Are the doors locked from the outside?

did you get on via Track 9 3/4?

Depends on which train. It it's full of zombies, then yeah that's good.

A stopped train in the middle of nowhere just means we.. uh you, have a new problem!

Has Hercule Poirot shown up?

Ugh. Good luck.

depends can you hear banjos?

I mean, if you were in the mood for a hike, it's great news!

👀

Are there people on horses with bandanas on their faces?

No. But I am in the last car, so would be the first to get gotten!

As someone who has only traveled on west coast Amtrak thats just normal for us. Then I remembered that easy coast Amtrak passengers actually have priority over freight traffic.

Ответ для Claire

Is that why the Amtrak I was on didn't move for over an hour just outside Union Station in DC?

Don't trigger me. I got stuck for 36 hours on the auto train a few years ago. Haunts me. Half the time we had to go BACKWARDS to allow commercial trains to use the tracks.

If it’s Amtrak, that’s how it rolls.

Probably waiting for traffic to clear ahead

OK, so, I’m looking at timetables and such, and it is possible that … we’re just early … and keep having to stop to stay on schedule?!

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Nope, you're at the murder mystery halt.

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Or pulling over to let another train pass? (This happens in the midwest all the time -- freight trains have the right of way.)

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Yeah trains in front of you on the timetable have priority in station, there’s track switches, trains occupying the track you gotta be on etc…ain’t no thang, standard train fare.

Watch out for the man in the trench coat and hat! 🤭

Idk what line you are on, but possibly yes. The ne corridor requires track changes/ crossings that sometimes require stopping. I was on the opposite side last week and stuck on a Philly local train that was flooring it in terrifying fashion to not screw everyone else up

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Yes.

Ответ для Chris Geidner

I mean…probably not great to have a train sitting at the station? Or blasting past and screwing people who didn’t get there early? Does it jam up platform traffic somehow?

Ответ для Chris Geidner

I know Amtrak has lowest priority on most of the tracks it runs on, and sometimes ends up having to stop and let freight have right of way - possible something similar going on?

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Could be a hare on the track.

Ответ для Chris Geidner

No it's obviously robbers on horseback

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Is anybody playing a banjo?

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Train running early? Is this even America any more?

Ответ для Chris Geidner

It could be to let the dementors catch up.

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Most Amtrak trains run on tracks that belong to privately owned freight companies. They're supposed to give passenger trains the priority, but they control the signals, so...

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Where you heading?

Ответ для Chris Geidner

Perhaps you are on the train version of the bus adventure that @musicologyduck.bsky.social took?

Ответ для Chris Geidner

If you’re early you may have to wait for an on-time train to clear the switch before it can be set for your train. Too bad there is no conductor to ask, can you call the engineer?

best music video

It was good for the plot of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Not sure about your situation though.

That depends on whether you're living in a romcom (good), a thriller (maybe-bad), or a horror (bad-bad).
