Ahh... when music filled the airwaves! Actually got to hang with JJ one night. Wild! He was from Philly, me from Cleveland, little rivalry going. 1981 was some year, graduated HS and bought a brand new 81 Mustang off the lot. Good times.

That was a game changer. From that moment forward, you could not release any song that had a shot at being a hit, without a video.

Now that was when America’s music was great.

I remember MTV as many imaginative videos propping up execrable songs.

Can't lie MTV was a huge part of my life for many years. That song sucked but seemed good because it was on MTV.

I remember when MTV started. It was all music videos. It widened our musical horizons. Loved it!

And that was also it's last song. A fitting ending.

Yup, I was 4 years old when MTV was born. MTV introduced me to Madonna, Janet Jackson, New Kids on the Block, Nirvana, Hole, Green Day, & many more.

Caught a small trove of MTV Day 1 trivia on FB earlier: 209 videos played that day (including repeats; earliest to be replayed: "You Better You Bet," The Who), the last 6 of the day where all 1st-time plays, #209 was "Lonely Boy," Andrew Gold.

I had the tv on, waiting. And then it began. MTV. Music television. I watched, or listened everyday. But the decay over decades is saddening. I don't remember the last time I watched. And it was the last time. Again, saddening.

For me mtv is teen mom and commercials, ipod saved us from it.

120 minutes was the best.

When I first heard about MTV, I didn't know that cable television was a thing. (I was 8.) I assumed it was a different kind of TV and figured my dad wouldn't want to get one... We must have gotten cable within the next couple of years because I clearly remember the debut of "Thriller."

I totally remember this. It was indeed culture changing.

I miss the old MTV…….

I was disheartened when they started doing the whole 16 and pregnant programming and the like. They ran it into the ground.

And they played that video at least 20 times a day because there wasn’t enough content available.

I still cannot believe it’s over

If you wanted to watch a specific video because everyone said it was awesome, you had to watch live and hope to catch it. No streaming, no recording. I don’t know how many days I had to watch to finally see Thriller.

MTV was so short lived as music television. IMO, no reason to celebrate it in its current form.

Pat Benatar's 'You Better Run' was the second! Good times.

And I remember it well. A mess of us gathered in the TV lounge of Alice-Lloyd dormitory at U of Michigan to watch the video. I also remember precisely where I was when I learned of the Challenger disaster. And exactly where I was on 9/11. Strange how singular moments stick in the memory.

and then "reality TV" killed the music video.

MTV not available in the UK until quite sometime after that. Ironic, considering Buggles were a London band. It was only in 1982 that the UK expanded to 4+ Channels, with Channel 4 & S4C launching. The only music telly we had for a long time was 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' & 'Top of the Pops'.

I miss radio. Never knowing what you're going to get, hearing something new that you might never have heard if your favorite DJ's hadn't played it. A good DJ's banter and commentary. Early MTV did the same, especially shows like 120 Minutes and Yo! MTV Raps.

And music was never quite the same. Reduced to wallpaper.

They went from "Video Killed The Radio Star" to "Corporate Greed Killed The Video Channel"!

MTV changed everything about music on the tube. For now, I will not think about anything unlovely about it that came later. This moment was glorious 😘

MTV was great in its early days, always kept me current on what was new and hot in music. Not so much any more.

Warner tried to buy Nickelodeon’s PopClips (1980-81) from Michael Nesmith, but they just watered down the idea and did MTV instead.
