Yup, I think this part was for the fire department. My hope is that when the hospital moves, we can fix it by narrowing the islands and turn lanes to fill in the gap.
The middle turning lane was included for drivers to make left turns. Fire Deparment only wanted the mountable islands. The lane is mostly used for drivers to pass the nonexistent bike riders. There has been some nascent efforts to extend the eastbound bike lanes to Fort Williams Parkway.
Interesting, I thought they wanted the enter turn lane to pass westbound traffic since the on-street sidewalk would not allow drivers to move right, hence the mountable islands.
