Oof, I kinda wish I could do this, but now most happy endings I encounter seem completely ungrounded and unbelievable. I can't do rom-coms anymore. The last happy ending I can remember that didn't leave me grumbling was Dexter: Resurrection. 😂

It's too bad that I don't watch many movies anymore. But a silver lining is that, by the time I'm up for it, I'm sure to have a friend who knows if I can handle it. If a cat even has an 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 they'll let me know it's hopeless, and then we'll sadly agree that it's a shame about my brain.

Agreed Less than a year after I buried my brother, friends invited me & my spouse to eat pizza and watch "Hey Jude" with them. We got to the napalm bombing scene and I pulled my hoodie over my eyes, then went into the kitchen. I've had trouble watching graphic violence & destruction since.

I check to see if a dog dies or if there's known triggers for friends because none of us want to deal with an emotional ambush.

oh man, then a whole lot of Chinese entertainment is not for you. I'm amazed by the number of bitter endings to stories and things classified as romances (which clearly are not if they don't have happy endings). I don't know if it's cultural, but it has been fascinating and a bit depressing.

Oh, yes. For the past decade+, my reading has been primarily mysteries in the cozy & historical varieties. I want justice to be done, but I don’t need psychological thrillers. Reality has enough of that. The historical series, many of them have ongoing romances, which has led me in the past year

That’s my basic approach to reading. I only read romance for a long time for just that reason

I wanna watch things that let me HAPPY escape. e.g., cozy murder mysteries, comedies, Widow’s Bay. haven’t watched the latest season finale of my beloved Will Trent bc I know what happens

I don't often watch movies on my own but when I watch with friends I literally read the entire plot summary on Wikipedia, I don't say shit because I'm not a dick but like I'm just too burnt out for this shit

I used to be categorically and staunchly against spoilers. Now I intentionally spoil everything for myself so I don’t accidentally subject myself to unnecessary sadness.

I'm prone to reading the wikipedia articles of movies first just to see if they seem interesting enough to actually watch or if the plot summary suffices

Sometimes I can take a sad movie, even welcome it, BUT only in certain moods. I was blindsided recently by Train Dreams. Going in, I had no idea what the central event was going to be, and watching it I was A MESS. So yes, I like your approach and I think I am going to use it more often.

South Korean romcoms and my kid’s @dropout.tv subscription are the two biggest things saving my sanity this summer. I’m not sure what I’m going to do when she takes her subscription back to college with her in two weeks…probably cave and buy my own subscription.

I saw a lot of folks saying a movie with a cat was good, but it's a monster movie, and I absolutely googled if the cat died first. I should have googled even more spoilers though because I wanted a monster movie and it was all deep and sad. I just can't handle that kind of thing right now!!

i aways have wanted to know how a movie ends before i see it. and i read the end of the book first, i hate suspense.

I'm also a _lot_ more sensitive to drama and sadness in the middle of the story these days too, even if I know it ends on a happy note

There's a safety tool for tabletop role-playing games, LARPs, etc., called Lines & Veils - Lines are things that won't be part of the game AT ALL and ANY player can add WHATEVER to them. Veils are things that can happen, but only off-screen (like anything more than smooching).

I’m a huge Tarantino fan, and I love Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, and Django in part, because spoiler alert, the people getting revenge and laying waste to the misogynists, nazi’s, and slaveholders, are a woman, a Jewish woman, and a slave instead of your standard middle aged white dude.

I keep tumbling into fandoms that are "oops it's about how capitalism is a scourge and leads to dystopia" and like, yes, it is, but can I have some unrealistic utopic optimism in my sci-fi? and without being post-post-apocalypse with an Earth that collapsed into ruin?

Ha! I did that with a show I was watching yesterday - the Ark. Season 2 was headed in a direction I didn't like. I skipped to the season finale and that is now the series finale for me. As far as I'm concerned everyone is together, safe and happy. The end.

There are two kinds of media consumers now: ones who want the media to reflect our times and ones who want a complete escape from it. I'm in group 2... although the Dungeon Crawler Carl books are somehow working for me... maybe because it's watching people fight back against and win.

Remember the Friends episode, where Phoebe's mom? grandma? had the sad movies like Bambi and Old Yeller end before the extra sad endings, so Phoebe didn't believe others when they discussed the actual endings.

I know, I haven't watched The Wild Robot yet, because I heard it makes you cry. Not sure if I was just in the mood or what, but Project Hail Mary made me all Niagara Falls cry hard. I rarely buy movies, but I bought it, not sure when I have the tears to watch it again.

My reading/viewing for pleasure these days is very heavy on the mystery genre. Ones where the bad guys get caught & face punishment at the end. The morality tale made into a puzzle.

i've been getting this way with a lot of games lately. if i get even a whiff that the main character or someone else important isn't gonna make it, i'm out. just can't handle sad or bittersweet anymore these days.

You are my people. I mostly watch documentaries and comedy now. I will not watch another movie where a woman or child is killed so a man can be heroic or violent. And I can’t do sad or “challenging” anymore.

I had to stop watching Invincible because it was bad for my mental health. Seems like there's a lot of dystopian fiction these days. I get enough of that from reality. Sometimes it feels like people can't imagine a better world.

My sister reads the news every day and loves romance novels because they have happy endings and she's very emotionally healthy so I endorse this strategy

I have a list of movies I’ll never watch again because of that.

i'm the kinda person who'll straight walk out of a movie theater if a movie hits a hard no limit of mine and i'm so lucky to have friends that are cool with me skipping things that hit that territory. they know it's not personal to them if i bail.

Sometime around 2014 I ceased participating in downer media and I have no intentions of ever stopping.

I don't do this but I do always read the last sentence of a novel first. Haven't ruined one yet. Totally understand the sentiment though, there are some things I've had to watch in chunks when the nope kicked in.
