Similar (but better) to what I did at google in the late 00s. New books got the ol’ choppy-choppy, but huge rooms of people clicked pics of truckloads of books from libraries and universities.

Why do IA scans so often have excess speckling and other flaws that repeat from page to page? It's as if the glass isn't being cleaned.

I was always impressed by an industrial photocopier at my school that you could place a book in face-down and it could flip the pages itself. God alone knows what it would have done to old, fragile books! 😂

I never thought people cut up books for archiving, but I also never thought they'd have a fancy machine like this either lol, that's sick

One of my joys is catching a ghostly thumb on one of the page scans. It adds to the mystery and magic.

And the Archive keeps the original books, original scans, and OCR's it. I would bet a lot of money that these AI guys are just OCR'ing, and throwing away the original scans. They just want the text.

Because books have souls, and you can hear them scream when you dismember them.
