I guess my problem with this is that this feels like if cigarettes were invented 15 years ago and cancer rates doubled this would be an article warning about not idealizing the pre-smoking society. I don’t like the surveillance and gambling machines everyone keeps on them all the time!

I get the idea of needing to actually regulate cigarettes or whatever but also maybe don’t criticize people for not smoking.

People need something to do with their hands when they’re not scrolling and what comes to mind easiest is what people used to do before scrolling. I think it’s an improvement.

i don't think playing poker in the classroom and telling new york magazine about the goings on inside your school really count as evitating surveillance and gambling though. especially when all the youth social media moral panic lays groundwork for ID verification everywhere online
