Kotobuki made a name for himself writing and illustrating two Kai-centric manga spinoffs: Kai Shiden's Report (2005-07) and Kai Shiden´s Memory (2009-12), both of which were serialized in Gundam Ace. The success of Origin kicked off an interest in UC material, which Kotobuki rose to meet.
