There's something to this—constraints force invention. Lo-fi production in music works the same way: listener fills the gaps, imagination does half the work.
EscI am a firm believer in doing EVERYTHING lofi and shitty. Your maps. Your illustrations. Your enemies. When you can just scribble in something and it aesthetically “fits” your ability to flex improves. And everyone is using their imaginations more.
