If you have a physical music collection, just go fishing through it once in a while. Have a big ol' rummage, get all your CDs, tapes, vinyl, whatever, out on the floor and just look through em. Bang a few on, read some liner notes, it's just magic, honestly.

I do it all the time. I love reading liner notes. Some can be quite surprising to find some other artist on their for a vocal or a guitar part.

agreed. my collection is large enough to have 2 full walls of coverage, and very often I will just grab something off the shelf and peruse the artwork and liner notes, let alone listen to them, lolz, which I do daily.

I went digital only a few years ago, but you are right and I think iTunes, etc are missing a trick in having a virtual equivalent of exactly what you are talking about.

I had a more than 5k pieces of vinyl at one time. A tragedy occurred and they were all gone. I ended up selling my stereo and quit collecting - for 30+yrs. With encouragement from my brother, I got a new set up and have been buying vinyl like a mad man. TV consumption went to 0 and music went to 100

It took me 60 years to get them in alphabetical order by artist in genre sections, so putting 1000 lps and 2000 cds on the floor won't happen unless we have a major earthquake. I do look at them, play them and re-read liner notes as often as I feel the need.

haha, I reassembled mine by grouping bands together yesterday - no idea why I'd not done that before. looks nice having all a band's discography lined up!

Hard agree. Not the part about turfing them all on the floor, right enough, but definitely on the rummaging through them and putting on stuff you haven't listened to for years. A joyful way to spend a few hours.

I've been trying to catalogue mine (when I remember and can be arsed), and have been using those times to listen to albums from whatever letter I'm cataloguing at the time. The constraints make me play stuff I might skim past if I had full scope.
