In my early teens I asked my uncle Ted about the trenches. He was at Ypres, got gassed twice. He told me about the rats, the food, dead horses but never dead men. Lived to late 80s in Richmond, Yorkshire. Smoked literally like a trooper. The hospital found 2 marks on his lung, from the gas.
