Heading to San Diego for a journalism conference next month. I figured I’d try to check out the San Diego Zoo while there. The cost is $78 per person!! Has anyone been? Is it worth it? Maybe my wife, who is always so proud to point out that the St. Louis Zoo is free everyday to visit, has a point.

It's top-tier: the main campus is large, nicely themed, updated and modern. You'll learn a lot. Food is pretty decent and varied too. On crowded days the nice food can run out quickly, though. SD Zoo also has a 2nd location, the Safari Park, which is also a very cool experience.

$78 per person is an insane price when the Smithsonian is *right there*, but it's very nice and I think you can earn the value of the ticket. Balboa Park is also right next to the Zoo and also a must-see in SD - and you can do most of it for free.

Living around here with so many amazing free options definitely spoils us. I remember feeling the same when my kids & I went to Chicago (which was so fun but made me realize I was taking the Smithsonian & National Zoo for granted.)

went last year, it's really only worth it if you go in the morning when it is cool. by mid-afternoon all the animals are sheltering and there's not much to see. The strength of this zoo seems to be strategic placement of viewing areas in the pens - you can get really close!
