I would like to draw people's attention to the fact someone has set up what is best described as a racist bookshop in rural Suffolk

1321925

Oldspeak Books is shutting their premises. Citing an inability to maintain a welcoming environment. But if you want to create a welcoming environment, don't be so utterly stupid as to put "remigration now" flags in your front window!

Kerning is my passion

I mean, you're a bookshop, why would you be trying to appeal to illiterates?

Hmmm, they are going out of there way to be unwelcoming to most of us. But perhaps some people did see them that way? They pays their money and they makes their choice. In this case, they chose unwisely.

"Join us for a pint (we're fully licensed) bants and a book in our Reichstag reading room"

She couldn't maintain a welcoming environment. OMG the irony as she waves a huge "Fuck off immigrants" sign in her window.

Ответ для Interesting Times

“Fuck off” would be friendlier; at least it has a voluntary aspect.

A friendlier location you say. Have you tried 1933 Berlin?

Ответ для Ternfortheworse

👏👏

"I am also searching for premises in a friendlier location. If you know of a place that might suit, please do get in touch." Nigel Farage's front yard? Maybe?

"Welcoming environment", "Greet everyone warmly", "a wide range of imports"... Are we absolutely sure this isn't some sort of satirical masterpiece?

I thought that lot wanted to create a hostile environment.

maybe she was expecting some trade from across the border in Thetford.

“Britain’s only conservative and common sense bookshop” 🤡 Targeting the demographic that is least likely to actually read a book seems like a flawed marketing strategy in my view…and economic reality has confirmed my assessment.

I'd never heard of them but apparently they are/were "Britain’s only centre-right bookshop". Somewhere that Nick Clegg and various Tory wets might hang out then?

I noticed they have a deeply fictitious book for sale on their website - "75 Brexit Benefits".

Go fash, lose cash.

Imagine going for an audience that doesn't really read

Ответ для Ben Austwick

This is exactly it. It's all performative. I've met people like that and there's no read books in their houses. The handful of unread ones they do have they were told to buy by others to support people they like. It's treated like merchandise or a totem of anti-social.

Swansea. A small local cinema here is also closing down. The owner refused to close during lockdown until she was forced to and then invited Katie Hopkins to speak. She never understood that the people who went to her cinema were offended by her whereas her supporters never went near her place.

There must be a friendlier location where fascists are welcome. Late 30s Nazi Germany perhaps?

Ответ для pinkybum

Clacton.

Ответ для pinkybum

Doggerland?

Ответ для pinkybum

I feel sorry for them. Where will they seek asylum?

The customer is always Right

Floated their Racist Bookshop idea on TwitX and had loads of 'yes, do it' and likes. Neglected to factor in that most responses were RtWng Bots. Thick AF

More of this, please! Make more racist twat-biscuits miserable and destroy their livelihood

That lot are more “book burners” than “book readers”, I thought.

Racists burn books, they don't buy them. Here endeth the karmic lesson.

Ответ для Todd Kendall

They have to get the bonfire books from somewhere…

The closure of a bookshop is a sad thing. This exception proves the rule.

Racist discovers yet more inconvenient consequences of being a racist…

Looking for new premises in a friendlier location? I recommend Nazi Germany

Even if the views weren't horrid I often wonder how such specialised book shops ever get by. The left wing one in Durham for instance. How many people read books about socialism in a small city? And here it's political views that appeal to people who aren't big readers....

Ответ для Craig Grävling

Well, @lighthousebks.bsky.social in Edinburgh is another left wing bookshop. But I can vouch for that one being quite a nice place to shop for books, which helps a lot. Oldspeak on the other hand went out of their way to make their shop look as unwelcoming as possible!

Ответ для Craig Grävling

Student town!

Ответ для Craig Grävling

I'm going to give a shout out to Hive, the online shopfront for loads of independent bookshops www.hive.co.uk Support your local (or not so local) welcoming bookshop today!

Ответ для Craig Grävling

The People's Bookshop sells rather more than just "books about socialism", which is why it's thriving and has moved to bigger premises.

Ответ для Craig Grävling

I mean, it's basically a normal secondhand bookshop, with about a quarter of the floorspace dedicated to socialist/social justice/environment stuff. I suspect most of their custom is the general stock.

Ответ для Craig Grävling

Students (came across a fellow student in there) and expanding to cover different academic subjects.

Ответ для Craig Grävling

We've had one in Liverpool since the 70s. They have a space they rent out and its owned by the lovely people working there, they also sell music, clothes, all sorts

A red flag in a really literal sense.

Good to know that this emporium of hate didn't survive even in Suffolk.

Ответ для Alan Pennie

As a Suffolk resident I can safely say that the raise the colours brigade didn’t make it this far north from Essex.

Karma's a bitch

Handy when racist business owners are so transparent. To be applauded. Like tradesmen who have Reform party, or Brexit party logos on their vans. Makes chosing a plumber etc. very easy

Ответ для gdun1

Same in the U.S. Anytime a dumbass fascist business owner has a MAGA bumper sticker on a business vehicle, heroes mobilize online and in the community to destroy that business as quickly as possible through boycotts, protests, sabotage, and more aggressive and subversive actions. Truly inspiring.

Nice of her to post about her struggle though.

I went on their website and there are quite a few propaganda books. Which explains why most people don't want to shop there. No, I don't want to listen to you tell me how Alex Jones and Lyndon LaRouche was right unironically. So it is not even a normal bookshop.

Ответ для Hunor Deak

always worth scrolling up to the OP before replying

The kind of people who buy and read books do not vote Reform/Restore. No wonder they don't come to your bookshop. I wouldn't. It's a self inflicted wound and a display of, lousy business acumen.

Well done Suffolk, speaking with their pounds and pence.

She could move to Great Yarmouth, sell buckets & spades as well and phone Immigration on charity rowers at sea with the rest of the knuckle draggers on the east coast.

A racist bookshop seems like the most definitive example of an oxymoron you could get.

We value freedom of speech, say Oldspeak Books, but only in one direction.

Ответ для Snigdha

orwell? fucking orwell? ORWELL? jesus

Ответ для Snigdha

Starkey as your historian .....

Ответ для Snigdha

Holy crap!!! 😬😬😬

Ответ для Snigdha

Orwell!! That’s hilarious. The intersection in the Venn diagram of ‘friendlier area’ and ‘people who can think, never mind read’ is empty, shame.

Ответ для Snigdha

I can live with Orwell, but dear God can you imagine how crushingly tedious a shop full of Scruton and Starkey would be?

Ответ для Snigdha

Orwell must be turning in his grave to find himself lumped together with Scruton and Starkey

Ответ для Snigdha

A place that describes itself as a home for conservative thought, also recognising that it's unable to maintain a welcoming environment is so damn close to a revelation, there's only a couple of dots to join up before they see it.

Ответ для Snigdha

I wonder how they expected to survive in the independent bookshop ecosystem? Is 'i don't stock that but they might' no one is recommending them, at least not twice.

Ответ для Snigdha

They don’t mention the racism

Ответ для Snigdha

Hmm. Doubleplus ungood.

Ответ для Snigdha

Really showing her knowledge of literature by including Orwell in there. I regret not going in there and asking if she could order Homage to Catalonia.

Ответ для Snigdha

How come freedom of speech & British values have become synonymous with racism & the far right? Labour voters also agree with freedom of speech & British values. We're just don't support the racism bit.

Ответ для Snigdha

Fuck me. She's clearly never read Orwell has she? 🤦

Ответ для Snigdha

I imagine Orwell could write a wicked essay about this shop.

Ответ для Snigdha

Anyone tagged @dorianlynskey.bsky.social yet?

Ответ для Snigdha

The fact you can tell immediately that this was written by ChatGPT

What, she doesn't understand why there aren't enough white readers to keep her "Whites Preferred" bookstore open? Running a bookstore is, I think, a tough skate without deliberately telling a bunch of readers to piss off and accidentally saying the same to many others.

Ответ для Greg Stolze

There are numerous instances of the publishing industry as a whole not doing nearly enough to appeal to more people. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that this bookshop did nothing to rectify any of that!

Nice

I remember when the BNP bookshop in Welling was a focal point for the racist/anti racist marches after Stephen Lawrence's murder. It was finally shut down. We weren't sad.

“New premises in a friendlier location.” Clacton maybe? Should be able to decide next week.

Moving to on-line vendor instead

Very highly rated on trust pilot...presumably by the NF or whatever they call themselves these days I do wonder if 'Oliver' has ever actually been inside a Waterstones?

Ответ для bggyoneandonly

"I love this bookshop. Occasionally I may even make a purchase there." If even the racist shop's fans barely spend money there, it's no mystery as to why it closed.

"I am also searching for premises in a friendlier location. When I have built my time machine I will let you know where exactly in 1930s Alabama I pitch up"

I'll miss their weekly book burnings...

It's also in Long Melford where, frankly, anyone would struggle to maintain any bricks-and-mortar bookshop.

Probably some options in the Portsmouth area. (I grew up in the area. Insular is an understatement.)

I'm no business guru, but it seems being openly hostile to one group of people and attempting to sell books to another group who are not big on books or reading, is a questionable strategy.

Seems it'd be real easy to tell who's genuine by how bald they are and when they throw a Nazi salute.

Ответ для Kristian van der Vliet

Do they have kids and a wife with them? Not genuine.

The only fully licenced bookshop!

Ответ для LibLabGreen Barbara
Ответ для LibLabGreen Barbara

Common Sense!!! 😂😂😂 How did that work out for you?

Ответ для LibLabGreen Barbara

I must have imagined having a beer in a bookshop in Cornwall.

David Starkey..

Ответ для Mark Freedman

She loves all the biggest shits in England.

Is it down to the fact that the people these books are aimed at reached peek reading capability on page 3 of the sun?

Is the 'harder to find,' book Mein Kampf?

A

It’s a bold business strategy - opening a bookshop aimed at people with a reading comprehension level of a 5 year old.

I live ten minutes from this shop and this news has made my day.

Ответ для Lavenham Teacher

It's a very handsome building (looks like a disused chapel) and any new use, even a betting shop, will be an improvement.

Todays lesson. When you indulge in Old Speak, you will surely fail.

"I am remaining fully online" Yeah well I think we knew that

Apparently they are holding a “Säuberung”evening soon followed by an inevitable “Kristallnacht” response!

I took a look at the shop’s website. Really awful stuff. I hope they go under.

Searching for premises in a friendlier place, eh? Might I suggest Nuremberg, c.1937?

A more welcoming place for this deeply cretinous, completely stupid rancid old bigot who announces on her front page that she hates anyone in the following long list of categories? How about Strangeways? What a brainless moron.

Most people who support her politics don't read books.

The problem with these morons is that they think that everyone agrees with them.

He complains about lack of support for his book shop, Hmm, perhaps flag shaggers can't read ?

Mein Kampf, translated into various languages, will always be available in their online store. FREEDOM!

FAFO

There's a handy list of people to avoid at the bottom of that message!

Ответ для Jago2012

Lotus Eaters? New Culture Forum? David Starkey? That's people we'd probably be avoiding like the plague regardless!

Ответ для Jago2012

They import books? Bloody Johnny Foreigner pages coming over here and taking our ink.

Did they check the venn diagram of 'people who support remigration' and 'people who read books'. I don't think the two circles intersect....

Something a bit hypocritical in her bragging about her imported titles. Are they legal?

Closed shop for closed minds

They're located in a racist area so presumably thought that would go down well.

Oh no! Where will I get a copy of The Turner Diaries now?</sarcasm>

Ответ для NickPheas

I haven’t thought about Anthea for years.

So she's happy to import books? Surely she should be working to repatriate them not bring them into Ingerland?

Who knew most bookshop addicts tend toward the liberal? Looks like a demo by an old geezer who was planning to close the shop anyway.... He would have lost some business had he put a Palestinian flag in the window - but he'd have gained a few also

Ответ для Jack London

Not sure little Tommy's lot can read, or Rupert's ever read anything published in the last 80 years other than the Telegraph....

'A friendlier location' you mean a more racist one.

Good work everyone. Let's show them that the online space can be just as unwelcoming

Not as many racists out there as they would like. What a shame not. Location; Ringers Yard, 9 Hall Street, Long Melford, Suffolk, CO10 9JF, England.

just sat here envisioning the kind of person who 1. has the classic Hallmark-movie / tumblr fanfic-writer dream of "moving to a rural town to open a bookshop!", 2. has the cash reserves to actually make it happen and 3. makes it a racist bookshop

Ответ для xargirl

It's all quite sad when you put it like that.

Ответ для xargirl

"After a sudden end to her career & marriage, after mispeaking at a public event, Susan returns to her home town to rebuild her life. Striking up a friendship with an intense ex-offender was not in her business plan but their struggle to revive her family's old store leads Susan to a new awakening."

Perhaps he should look for premises in Orania?

Based on the increasimgly frantic tone of her posting I am beginning to suspect that running a racist bookshop was not financially viable particularly given just how extreme she is. Even in a media environment this permissive no one is dumb enough to go on GBNews and endorse The Camp of the Saints

Ответ для Wrath of God Bot

The secret to The Racism Grievance Business is that it's a lot like OnlyFans - there's a 1% that do really well out of it, and a *very* long tail of people showing their arses for no reward.

Ответ для Wrath of God Bot

Save that for the Spectator

Ответ для Wrath of God Bot
K

Is there not a massive flaw in running a racist bookshop, namely you are courting a customer base who are resistant to the product you are trying to sell them? Not sure thugs who fly flags & attack immigrants are ‘great readers’.

Ответ для Wrath of God Bot

Most specialist bookshops fail, even when not pushing hate, that is merely a route to fail faster, In the late nineties there was a good bookshop dedicated to politics and history near Westminster, Bankrupt, An Aviation bookshop in Highbury, Bust.

Ответ для Wrath of God Bot

That's because the fuckers don't read

Ответ для Wrath of God Bot

Any examples?

It isn't just the vile flag but look at their Instagram page on what they sell, I'm glad it's shutting down.

Ответ для Stuart Dillon

Yeah, I had a quick browse on their ‘gram. Super emergency yikes. It wasn’t even a bit if racism mixed in with lovely books about penguins and astronomy, it was just all fascism plus, for some reason, Aesop’s Fables.

If the racists could read they'd be very upset.

Ответ для Raedwald

Heh!

What's odd about this English reactionary stuff is it's so blatant that it's culturally inappropriate. I know of one 'historic' American bookstore owned by conservatives and they're much more subtle - if they weren't, they'd alienate people who actually *read*.

Maybe the flag was simply to announce it is she that is remigrating? Possibly to 1930s Germany?

WTAF?

Sadly for him, his customers can only buy so many copies of Mein Kampf before their neighbours start looking at them oddly.

"I am also searching for premises in a friendlier location." Has he tried Germany in the 1930s?

Props to you both for bringing this to my attention. Turns out they're openly publishing some of the most extreme fascist list out there. Passed this info on.

They are looking for a friendlier location but i can't wish this on anyone. Maybe the moon.

It reminds me of the old NF joke vote NF and send the anglo saxon back

She's looking for a friendlier location for new premises. Maybe it's not other people being unfriendly, if your core belief is to kick a quarter of the people out of the country.
