The portfolio mix itself should shift in response to weather and climate variability, with policy acting as a mechanism that lets capacity move or mobilize where and when it’s needed. Not a massive portfolio changeout due to dramatic policy. A real geography problem to solve.

Or geothermal or hydro standing in for nuclear where geographically permissible (an expanding target for geo and a nearly maxed one for hydro in many places).

If you overbuild solar +storage, you end up in a spot where you have far too much power and storage in summer that you need to dispose of. And you need to replace all heating in like -20 to -30. I'm pretty sure there's limits on how good Air source heat pumps are and we will need to cover those

Also implies a very steep build out of nuclear for this to work tbh. Or literally massive interties so the renewables can cover each other.

OTOH, there’s tons of stuff that we don’t do because electricity costs are too high and we could just do those in the summer. Desalination is the most obvious one, but you could pass other regulations forcing things to be seasonal.

The Terraform Industries model of using solar to power carbon capture -> synthetic fuel production is another process that could be used as a seasonal power sink. Obviously less effective than deploying in lower latitude locations, but that’s true of anything with a solar component.

Having talked with people in Alberta who rely on only heat pumps, -30C isn't that big a deal for modern heat pumps in houses with good insulation. IIRC the pumps still work, but your house might be slightly cooler, but not freezing. -30C days are also getting rare, maybe 1-2 days a winter

Some continuing progress on the geothermal front. For whatever reason, the Trump folks don't see it as 'green-coded' and therefore bad the way they do wind and solar
