The amount of airtime taken up by the GWOT in either the news or the popular games and movies and TV shows meant that for seven or eight years it was omnipresent and if you objected to the idea of an invasion, you were basically Taliban. Something can mess up a cohort w/out being as bad as a war.

Not to mention that even though people at home saw no real violence after the 9/11 attacks, the number of our troops we were used to seeing die in deployment was zero; I wasn't old enough to watch the Gulf War but I do remember that until we went to Iraq I never heard about our troops dying abroad.
