Democrats have always been horny for right wing compromise, that's how we got Bill and Hillary Clinton and everything that came after. Reagan winning so thoroughly in the 80s was the death knell of the "peacenik hippy, bleeding heart liberal" trope and the 90s crop of Dems really bought into it.
