Sure there's no transition? Check out global new car and light truck sales by powertrain. ICE vehicles have lost 1/3 of unit sales in the past decade. Dramatic decline, and quite obviously not about to reverse. Source: iea.blob.core.windows.net/assets/a096b...

And when this next gen of battery tech hits the market, it's game over for the majority of ICE vehicles.

Can you explain more? Is there a concrete new gen that is production ready? Or more of a less concrete accumulation of improvements that will likely cross some threshold in the future? I’ve heard of some breakthroughs but afaict scaling is its own challenge

Q

There should be transition away from cars - more public transport, active transport, work from home.

Ответ для qbas81

All valid points, but what vehicles there are should be electric as soon as possible

Q

That's something but not good enough to cut all emissions by half this decade.

Ответ для qbas81

Well of course not. I have written about that in my Pragmatic Climate Reset Part II. Halving emissions by 2030 from a 2010 baseline starting in 2018 - as required for 1.5C - was impossible from the very first instant it was announced as a goal. See Section 2 here: about.bnef.com/insights/cle...

Norway is crushing it with EV

They are, but that huge swath of EV adoption is mostly... China.

Easter egg: FCEV stands for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, ie hydrogen cars. There aren't any. In fact, in the whole IEA report, the word hydrogen appears a grand total of zero times.

As it should be.

I think this overlooks hydrogen's key role in solar energy production

Ответ для Michael Liebreich

I still think hydrogen's day will come. It makes more sense for things like airplanes, freight haulers, and ships. For the latter the promise of boats harvesting hydrogen while at sail is too cool not to explore.

Ответ для Michael Liebreich

In the Netherlands there's 98 hydrogen cars for sale on a total of almost 350.000 used cars for sale.

I guess the annual Liebreich Associates FCEV vs BEV sales graph is now redundant. Maybe one more for old times sake?

I had a friend who was so hyped about fuel cells in 1999

Ответ для Michael Liebreich

You get Hydrogen fuel cells buses in Tokyo, on occasion. :-0

Of course ICEs are going to come back! They are working on bringing back V8s. V8s!

Ответ для Scott Gibson

As a luxury retro boondoggle perhaps. Peak ice car sales was in 2017, all new growth is going to BEV, especially since the Hormuz/Iran debacle increased costs for everyone.
