So what happens if you find out on the day you have been removed? Will they let you file a special vote? I ask because I was removed from the roll last year despite not moving and having voted in all previous elections for 40+ years. We do need to know when they stop removing people.

I believe you can always file a special vote.

I think part of the cause for concern (unfounded or not) is the Electoral commission's wording is if you think you are on the roll you can cast a special, but it will only count if you are [present tense] on the roll, which on the surface doesn't seem to cover people who used to be on.

So raising the issue of whether incorrect removals from the roll are invalid (so you really are still there) or merely illicit (so you really aren't but should be)
