this is really the entire conservative ethos (also the ethos for most rich folks)-and of course their version of history is a gauzy, soft-focus version where there is no such thing as “the plague” and the royals weren’t all inbred and diseased

It's also why conservatives always LOVED big government if its economic and coercive powers were used for maintaining their agenda. That's most of history. When a commercial class and democracy took power away from them, suddenly they preached small government. Bullshit. It's about control.
