Today, in 1958, the First Vessel Crossed under the North Pole Ice Cap USS Nautilus (SSN-571), the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, became the first vessel to successfully cross the North Pole submerged beneath the Arctic ice cap. "Operation Sunshine" was commanded by William R. Anderson.
