A huge problem in America is tgat so many of our journalists and policymakers now come from Ivy or near-Ivy elite backgrounds and live in elite enclaves. That fosters a lot of “empathy” for the malefactors of wealth.

smartphones and the internet, man. they might have destroyed journalism, driven people insane by the tens of millions, fueled a rise in global fascism, and literally touched off genocides, but at least they seem to have caused a global collapse in relationship formation too

I'm one of the casualties. Left my then mid-circulation daily, which was owned by E.W. Scripps after I watched Rich Boehne announce the shuttering of the Rocky Mountain News live from our newsroom. If anything was a harbinger of things to come, was the death of small town newspapers. 😔

This is one where it might also be useful to see absolutely numbers. It is sadly likely that a lot of this is due to a drop in newspaper staffing elsewhere.
