When I was in HS, Lorton was still a (poorly) functioning prison. Never in a million years could I have imagined that one day I would be exhibiting artwork in one of those buildings, but… “Murmuration” will be in a fiber show through Oct, part of Handwork 250, a nat’l celebration of American craft.

One thing I’m pondering (not accusing, bc honestly IDK): the majority of people incarcerated when Lorton was a prison were Black and the artists I saw today mostly white. I hope the arts center is making intentional efforts to be inclusive in its artist selection in light of that legacy.

We have seen some exhibits there in the past that were by and/or about former inmates, and others had nice diversity (e.g., one with work by FCPS art teachers, which I thought was cool). My sense is they are doing a good job; others may know much more.
