Okay #bsbookclub, serious question: I'm reading Huck Finn only because I think it's valuable for understanding James. I don't need to read Tom Sawyer to understand Huck Finn, do I?
Thx for the quick reply! Could you please say more about that? I see that HF is a "sequel" to TS, and that Huck is a character in Tom Sawyer. Are you saying HF stands alone, or just that it's potentially an infinite regress to read a book so I can read another book to read the book I want to read?
Nope. Huck Finn stands on its own. Imagine Huck as a young Southern teenager, impoverished, having seen and borne violence, who becomes friends with a middle class kid longing for the adventures he’s read about, even if he has to invent them. Eye rolls from Huck, but the Finn is a true friend.
I read Huck Finn after having seen the Wishbone Tom Sawyer decades prior, and I didn't need to know anything else about TS to very clearly understand HF!
