I feel moderately insane that the actual thing about air travel that's worse is the security theater and that's not what he's even talking about

like personally I do yearn for "not getting a free groping by TSA because the body scanner finds my gender presentation to be a security threat" and not, like, smoking on planes

I agree with you but that’s a very disingenuous read.

I enjoyed flying Southwest with my young family and not requiring the ticket price to nearly double because all I wanted to do was *gasp* sit next to my 3 year old 🤷

I think a lot of people see that as the price doubling when in fact that number is, adjusted for inflation, cheaper than it’s ever been… but now they also offer an even cheaper option if you don’t have any specific requirements, and so the still-low regular price incorrectly feels like a surcharge.

I can follow this argument - BUT one thing: the companies shouldn't be allowed to advertise with the cheapest option. The price displayed first during the booking process should be a price that includes sitting next to a family member. That would feel completely different during the booking process.

My point was it wasn't this way 8 months ago with Southwest when the company decided to completely change their model. And for us it's been for the worse; we haven't flown them at all as a result.

Yep I bailed out of a long term relationship with them because they tried to be like everyone else.

Get ready to enjoy more of that once the DOT show the upfront cost. Fare transparency is the next thing they plan to gut. We're not doing that nonsense Ryanair bullshit here and Spirit went under bc apparently Americans aren't as cheap. www.travelpulse.com/news/airline...

The introduction of basic economy is confounding, because it is crappier than anything available before and has mentally filled that position which regular economy used to hold. It's cheaper but that doesn't register as much as that it's worse.
