I know people are sore about the weird run that scored in the Red Sox/Jays game last night, but man do I love the fourth out rule.

Apparently Max Scherzer had strong feelings on the matter, and said he’d seen it happen before. He was on the 2009 Diamondbacks so his story checks out!

I remember it happening to the Yankees a number of years ago. Pop up to the pitcher on a squeeze play with runners on first and third. They doubled the runner off first but the runner on third had already touched home, no one realized they had to appeal at third.

Imagine getting a run in a playoff game on that rule. It almost happened! Watch the play at 1:50. Yelich lobs the ball to the infield while Duvall comes to the plate. If the shortstop doesn’t touch the base (which he did), and tags the runner for out #3, you have a time play. Maybe Duvall scores!

(I guess that’s the second baseman and not the shortstop.)

Am I crazy, or is Vin doing a terrible job of explaining what happened?

Yeah, not exactly crystal clear. I think he started to understand near the end.
