One of the things I wonder about a lot is where dems think this goes. Do they genuinely think this is tenable for 3 more years? Do they even think it is sustainable until November? I don't see a realistic situation where 3 years of this pass by without incident.

Don't worry about it.

It all makes sense once you realize the dems have the same donors/corporate interests as republicans. Difference is, while in power, only republicans can accomplish the ghoulish, unpopular goals they both want. While dems can only maintain the rightward-moving status quo via "incrementalism".
