I don’t understand. If zero is some kind of average of past data, how were most of the past years below it?

On the website showyourstripes.info/c it shows that it's the deviation based on the average temperature of 1961-2010.

I don't really like basing it on that average. It creates a visual effect that suggests the problem started somewhere in the middle of that period. Taking any other average wouldn't help, of course. It would just create a different illusion. But it's something to keep in mind.

I find this global graph quite interesting, though. From 1850 to ~1920 the temp seems reasonably stable. Around the world wars it rises. I wonder if there's a causal link. Then stable again, though warmer than before. Maybe even goes down a bit. From about 1975 onward, it rises and keep rising.

Well, if you look at the CO₂-concentration, it becomes obvious, what had happened. CO₂ went from 280ppm pre-industrial to 330ppm in 1970. Since then it rose another 100 to 430ppm today. So it is no wonder that it took till the early 90ies to get an accelerating heatup.
