Could you provide some studies confirming it? Last time I checked women are less happy and more depressed now when compared with the 1960-1970 period. I'm not sure that pills are specifically to blame though. But there's definitely something going on. Maybe it's the price of liberation.

I don’t think enough women visited psychiatrists before 1970 to even make an educated guess at their levels of depression

It wasn’t even called depression then, it was usually known as anxiety.

oh some did, and they'd get much less calibrated pills-"mother's little helper," my grandma took Valium regularly. or old school psychoanalysis, where you can get told your CSA is all in your head bc no one wanted to hear it when Freud first said "hey, I think they're telling the truth"

Maybe. But I guess they should know when they are happy or not.

How would we know if they were happy though, if every social pressure was in the direction of not expressing unhappiness?

I think people can act as free agents even when there are social pressures.

Expression of feelings is profoundly mediated by social pressure but I agree that free choices people make are indicative of their desires; ergo, they can choose to use contraception or not, & reasonably we can assume they are pursuing their own happiness.

You don’t need a study to see that women dying less in childbirth and having less children and having a say over their own bodies is conducive to “happiness” over all. And no study will capture the ppl who did not have free agency to express their feelings …

The women who were in a privileged place to express their feelings about motherhood (think Sexton and Plath) = choice would have prolonged their lives

Besides if we assume that women were as unhappy then as they are unhappy today, that means they can't be satisfied with anything? Oppression was bad, liberation is bad. What's good then?

It is in fact notoriously difficult to measure happiness, especially over time except in extreme cases For this reason we neither mandate nor prohibit birth control but rather trust individuals to decide for themselves
