The national Axios stuff can often be brutal - the house reporting on a blackjack hand - but I give them some credit for allowing locals to have a bit of flexibility for personality. Our regional newsletter is pretty good.

I work for Axios Salt Lake, and we do have a decent level of freedom. It varies with individual editors, but the message from on high is to allow voice & perspective. Our recruiter is also VERY good, & they hire a lot of really experienced local reporters. My coworkers consistently impress me!

That's great to know that my impression seems to be accurate and it's part of something systemic, not just the luck of the draw with my local reporters. It's a huge difference when you're able to hear someone's personal voice shine through and them sharing their favorite music, etc.
