Just because he can’t control his coalition partners doesn’t mean we need a new electoral system: we just need a new government #nzpol www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

That's the last reason we need a new electoral system, but we do need one. We need a different govt, not just a new/old one with endless do-overs where they never quite get around to doing anything different. Unless we are happy on this backwards track of course.

compulsory voting? preferential system (maybe like the Aussies?) definitely not back to FPP though

Definitely not any of those. I agree definitely not FPTP. I would rather ranked choice. Ideally I’d prefer a party-less system personally. I’m open to anything that improves MMP where we’re voting for 1 of 2 teams where yr team might just decide to exclude you. We’ve given politicians too much power

the aussies have ranked choice - that’s what preferential means.

Doesn't it mean they have to rank them?

Yes. Preferential.

I do not agree with having to rank every candidate/party.

So you don’t vote for party in Oz. Only candidates for house & senate, ranked (ppl usually just push for party ranking over individuals?). I quite like MMP with the party & candidate vote. I think we just hv an extreme situation atm: numpty PM + RW ideology up wazoo. www.aph.gov.au/About_Parlia...

Yes I understand, I just don't support the difference of having to rank EVERY candidate. I prefer a system closer to our local elections. I haven't liked MMP for a long time, irrespective of this govt. There are too many issues with it and it hasn't delivered the claimed outcomes at all.

I think it is working just fine for the politicians, and that's about all. Overwhelmingly popular polices remain undelivered, and we are more trapped in neoliberalism than we ever were. I want to see us build a real left alternative to this and that's what I will be voting for whether my vote

I wasn’t here for the vote/referendum/debate - didn’t return til 2004. Little idea of alternatives. Local elections are FPP though, largely, with some STV (ranking). I hate FPP is not representative. We need an upper house; more checks and balances.
