I'm actually fine with sounding old.

Someone said to me yesterday that they were "low-key excited" to see The Odyssey, and I thought, you're 54 and you have never sounded more 54 than you do at this moment.

Ответ для Mark Harris

Yes. My 14-year old would low-key slap me if I said Search it up.

Ответ для Mark Harris

I’ve tried using “low key” and “no cap.” Sadly I quickly reverted to my cringey boomer lingo.

That's just confusing mythologies. They were Hermes excited to see The Odyssey.

Ответ для Mark Harris

I like to lean into sounding old by saying “gurgle it”. I also call Benson Boone “Benton Hoopledoodle” because once I couldn’t remember his name and that’s what came out, and it annoys my kids. Sorry, it low key annoys my kids.

Ответ для Mark Harris

That person sounds sus.

Ответ для Mark Harris

My issue here is how can you be low-key excited? If it’s low-key, you must not be very excited. It’s like being “a bit flabbergasted.” And then when I’m done explaining this they beat me up and shove me in a locker that has appeared out of nowhere.

Ответ для Mark Harris

Saw it the other day. It was amazing, minus a few quibbles.

Ответ для Mark Harris

Instead of “google it,” my dad used to say, “put it in your machine.” So that what I say now. It sounds “old” but it makes me smile.

Ответ для Mark Harris

Would totally join a screening of other 54-year-olds low-key excited to see The Odyssey, could be fun

Ответ для Mark Harris

They forgot to add “bro”

Ответ для Mark Harris

people in their 50s need to get the fuck over themselves

I can culturally appropriate phrases utilizing both "vibe" & "fire" as they effectively convey their meaning but it makes me sad to see anyone who seems to rely on those phrases as a large part of their functional vocabulary.

Ответ для Mark Harris

But it’s a Nolan film. … And I’m ok with this

Ответ для Mark Harris

My teenager has almost worked this phrase into my lexicon

Ответ для Mark Harris

I use Gen Z slang in a self-aware slightly annoying way around my younger housemates lol, as is the circle of life

Ответ для Mark Harris

Me: "I'm Thor it'll be boring."

Ответ для Mark Harris

Meanwhile, in a completely unrelated occurrence, I was watching the 1968 Oscars Best Picture segment on YouTube last night -- I mean, COMPLETELY unrelatedly! I hadn't seen it before, somehow. There's a bit where they cut to backstage with Poitier and Steiger reacting to their Best Picture win. :-D

Ответ для Mark Harris

if i was 54 I would simply not care what others thought of my word choices

Ответ для Mark Harris

I used "low-key" in a post the other day, and now I feel residual shame and embarrassment.

Ответ для Mark Harris

Low-key is not a new term though. It's just gotten overused as of late.

Ответ для Mark Harris

Hope they don't Sleipnir through it! ...I'll see myself out. -_-

So am I, I´d gotten my very first PC and the internet connection about 13 years ago, and one of the first things I´d learned was "Google it". I´m old-fashioned anyway, here in Germany almost everybody´s "gendering" now, except for people like me. I´m 55 now, I´d grown up without that nonsense. 😂😂😂

Ответ для Marion Friedl

@markharris.bsky.social I think gendering´s only an issue in German or French-speaking countries, I don´t know, I find it annoying, if I say something like civilians, residents, teachers, doctors and so on I always mean male AND female ones. 👍👍👍

To be fair as I've gotten older I've come to hate google so I'd be fine with dropping using their name as a verb from my vocabulary.

I say duck it. Well, sometimes I say duck.

If we want to get rid of Google from our lives, we need to get rid of it from our language too. Say ‘I’m searching’ rather than ‘I’m Googling’. Language is power

Idc if i sounds old. Still think we should abandon "Google it" Google is one of the trillion dollar tech companies currently going out of their way to shove ai down our throats and working to increase the government's ability to control the masses. Google hasn't been a relevant search engine in 10

Ответ для Alara Roze

Years, they decided to inundated their search results with advertisers and buried useful information behind multiple pages worth of searches. Google sucks ass. Ill go to reddit and ask before I ask Google. Google is just gonna give me some ai overview shit based on the last five shit articles

This must be a joke. Must be. A Gen Z plant to make us sound even older.

The ‘new’ way sounds like it was made up by someone who has yet to finish high school - or likely a soon to be dropout.

I sounded old as a kid, and I'm not about to change that now that it's justified

That sounds cool. I’ll write out a notice and make a bunch of copies on my mimeograph machine and pass them out so the word gets around.

They'll have to come up with a new one now that the Grups know about it.

I worked as a contract QA engineer at Microsoft around the time Bing was launched and I actually did get called out for saying "Google it." They really thought Bing would become a thing.

Ответ для Griff

one of the most pathetically cringe things I have heard in my entire life was a Microsft employee suggesting you could “just Bing it” on the launch of that search engine

why do i have to "it up" thingies?

Me too.

‘Search it. Dammit.’

Ah geez I can't sound like a cowabunga kool kid and more?! Gosh darnnit

What about if you say "Let's ask Jeeves"?

this is fake news. i asked my kid and the preferred vernacular is "i want to rape a dolphin"

I can’t imagine I will ever in my life use the phrase, “search it up”

I'm so old I think saying "Google it" is cringe worthy. I will stick to what's always worked for me, which is politely suggesting a range of Dewey decimal addresses

While I'll grant that the slopification of Google makes, "Google it" obsolete and in need of replacement, "Search it up" is the most stilted bullshit attempt at slang I've ever heard.

Ответ для Greer

It's really not "an attempt at slang." It's just a common zoomer / Gen alpha expression. Maybe it will stick around, maybe not.

Ответ для Greer

"Look it up" was already perfect serviceable

Ответ для Greer

Slap that search up on the flippity floppity!

Ответ для Greer

Harsh realm, dude

I mean, I am old Its what happens when you cant accelerate at 1g in a rocket ship for 10 years

Google, sound me like a twat

I think I will just dry up and blow away...

"makes you sound old"? Really? I know Google doesn't like their name used as a verb but this is some pretty dumb gaslighting lmao

Why does it have the same number of syllables still tho? Youth’s job is improve stuff. Make search it up 2 syllables or 4 syllables or go home

I like to say 'go fuck yourself'.

Search it up? Did AI write the article?

Ответ для Horn Slack

my teens have been using this phrase for a few years so maybe it was written by a bunch of teens in a trench coat

I will slap anyone I hear using “search it up” as a serious response.

Yea I'm not saying search it up to anyone ever.

I'll bet nobody fucking says "search it up". And if they do, then they need to be taken out back like old Yeller.

Ответ для Mara

came here to post this

Yeahhhhhh, I will not be saying that, Kinder.

Where did the "Up" come from. Like "Search It" is so neutral. I have definitely said "Hold on, let me run a quick search" before. Why does one need to Search Up? That said, my opinion may be disqualified by the fact that I have with absolute certainty said "Let me do a little google-roo."

Ответ для Velvet

Native speakers of (American?) english loooooove to insert random prepositions and turn everything into a phrasal verb. It seems to be percieved as lowering the register and sounding more informal/casual. Might also be coming from when up and for are necessary in "look it up" or "search for it"?

NO ONE - and I mean NO ONE - says "search it up".

Paging @gretchenmcculloch.com Is this a regional thing? I have never heard "search it up" before. I asked my 12-year-old if he'd heard it and he looked at me like I was speaking in tongues.

Eh, I still use Kleenex, occasionally tell somebody I'll xerox it for them, and sometimes say I'm gonna tape that show. Googling it is the least of my worries 😄

bing it, zing it, no clip it to the backrooms

“Bing it” makes you sound old and out of touch. “Ba-da-bing it!” makes you sound old but hip, daddy-o.

Ответ для Ana Marie Cox

Ответ для Ana Marie Cox

John Oliver about this: - People use Google to the extent “googling” something is now a verb. You can’t say that for any other search engine. No one has ever said “I’m going to Bing it,” except for maybe Bing Crosby announcing he’s about to masturbate.

Ответ для Ana Marie Cox

I Duck it.

Ответ для Ana Marie Cox

Who do you think you are, Bada-Bing Crosby? Heh-heh, did ya hear what I told her, Tone? I asked her, “Who do you think you are, Bada-Bing Crosby?” Heh-heh.

Ответ для Ana Marie Cox

When I worked at Google we would often speak (sarcastically) about Binging things.

Ответ для Ana Marie Cox

I remember when Microsoft was product placing Bing and we got to hear a TV character say, "Let's Bing it." But then, that show also had a food stand owner shilling Subway.

I’m old enough that this immediately makes me think: “Is that Freedom Rock? Well, search it up, man!”

Motherfucker I sound old because I *am* old.

If you're still googling things in 2026 then enjoy your dumb ai future.

So I shouldn't refer to iphones as "googlanators" then?

I’m kicking you in the balls if you say ‘search it up’ to me.

I don't have an issue with sounding old. But I do have an issue with this company; unlike Amazon, it is nearly impossible to extricate yourself from their grasp so at least we could eliminate them from our language.

I think that's just cycling around to an older usage again. Maybe merging "search" with "look it up".

"Look it up" is right there...

Cool up, everybody.

Ответ для Sleestak

"Star boy" <giggle> 🤭

I stopped using the term "google it" when I stopped using Google for my web searches.

If I said search it up I’d sound like a 45 year old trying too hard to be hip with the kids

I will at least settle for "look it up" but search it up is a phrase I have literally never heard before and I worked at a university until very recently.

Ответ для Sarah Philo

High school kids and younger do in fact say this, I know because I spend all day working with them

Someone had an article deadline approaching and they had no idea what to write it about.

I still point to an encyclopedia and say "look it up!"

I’ll just ask the gopher to fetch what I need.

I still say Xerox and Kleenex. I'm fine saying Google it.

Ask Jeeves Yahoo Answers Reddit thread it 😂 AARP online

If I may suggest a compromise

M

Old eh? Search it up, search it down, search it in, search it out...how about search for it, or more economically, search it

Can I still use my hoover and roller blades?

Google sucks. There is no reason to search on it.

If "Google it" makes you sound old then "Search it up" makes you sound stupid.

“Search it up” is what an alien from outer space would say making pancakes, trying to acclimate to earthlings

Me too.

Me, too

In the same way that calling someone a "pill" made you sound old when everyone else was saying "buzzkill".

All the cool kids are saying "search it up "

Google it would be okay if Google actually gave us good results. Google pushes whoever is giving them money. I get so frustrated with trying to find stuff when Google won't show me what I want.

"Bing it, baby", said with a wink and a single finger gun.

Oh my god, I thought this was just something my 9-year old said, not knowing any better. I had no idea it was a whole thing!

"Search it up" just makes you sound stupid, not young.

Sounds dutch

I've stopped saying it because I don't use Google anymore. They don't deserve to be genericized.

Ответ для Geek in Korea

"I'll ask the internet" thank you

Ответ для Mina Klonopina

I like something along the lines of "I'll ask those Internets".

Google doesn't even work anymore, old man

Telling someone to use their Google machine rolls off the tongue much easier than use your search it up machine

How about "Fetch" it?

I can't even imagine how exhausting it must be to be in constant dogged pursuit of society's approval.

Search it up? Never heard that in my life and my kids are 19 and 23. Are they too old, too?

Cowabunga, Search it up my dude!

"Google it" has been cringe since they rescinded their "do no evil" policy.

DuckDuckGo it is awkward.

JFGI.

I'm going to keep using Google as a verb and general term for a similar tool, because fuck their trademark.

The only socially acceptable time to say "search it up" is when you've had one too many drinks, imo

Search it up sounds stupid

It's actually "ask ChatGPT" now.

Three years ago I gave my nice a dictionary for Christmas and taught her how to use it. Whenever she asks about anything I tell her to use her dictionary to find out. Lesson of the story: you could sound much older.

IDK, "search it up" sounds like a old's attempt to sound current and hip

I’m over here asking Jeeves

"Ask The Google" brings ancient misspeak into the Claudeosphere of pseudo companion/oracle on drugs Oracle's been inhaling for a looong time

My kids—young adults—have been saying this since elementary school. We've had many conversations about it. I always hear it in my then 1st-grader's voice asking me to "search up" something that does not have a google-able answer.

And "Bing it" is still good for a laugh.

Did Google's Branding team come up with this? Remember when Velcro went all in on protecting their brand and everyone started saying "Hook and loop fasteners" no? yeah it's "google" even if i used Duck duck Go

Ответ для Kevin Wardrop

i really doubt google wants people to *stop* using their brand name as a term for looking stuff up on the internet. that it came to be used that way was a huge win for them. i would love to get it out of my vocabulary, especially since im trying to de-google my life.

Ответ для Kevin Wardrop

Makes me think of how Band-Aid changed their “We are stuck on Band-Aid” jingle to “We are stuck on Band-Aid brand.”

Buffy the vampire slayer invented googling as a verb. Search it up.

I say "Google it" but I never used Google. (DuckDuckGo instead, for privacy)

Metacrawler that shit.

I'm 100% certain that the author of that article said "search it up" once, people laughed at them for it, and now they're bound and determined to make it a thing.

About two weeks ago I told a troll to Google it, but then added “P.S. - Actually use DuckDuckGo it’s a better search engine”. Because i’m nice.

Bunch of people arguing about how old they sound. You all sound 15 years old to me.

If you hear me say “search it up” just assume I’ve been busted for a serious crime and am now a confidential informant.

I feel old and I am old.

I will just start saying "go to the damn library" just to piss people like that article's author off.

I'm even more fine with being old.

Whatever. It’s not like I’m aging in reverse.

Ответ для Kat💙

As I check my AOL account on my dial up.

I just don't use Google anymore because I don't think it is a good search engine now. So, I just say "search it". I will never say "up" after that though

I just say "search for" because I really can't recommend Google to anyone at this point. I've never heard anyone say "search it up" though.

Cronehood and proud of it, words come and go, but we old people are still groovy
