Oh sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear: I did read the entire essay, which was excellent. And compared to some of the longer articles I've encountered lately, yours was eminently compact — said with gratitude.

Prompted by your comment, I went down that rabbit hole, and surprisingly, no commercial recording. I thought it might be in this massive, 120-CD box (1944 to 1958) but amazingly, no. There's probably a 1945 aircheck running around somewhere. Oh well, the Frankfurt version will do just fine

Another ardent Martinů fan here, and can't believe I've not heard this piece before. It's fabulous. Also had no idea until 10 minutes ago that Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra gave the premiere.

What a fabulous photo, thank you.

And again, after yesterday, no argument from me! Among many virtues: his gorgeous tone, and an ability to bring the volume level down to a whisper.

I can see why! Now I am, too. (My first encounter with him.)

Agree on all counts. His intensity, coupled with brilliance from Ammiel Bushakevitz, often had me in tears. Marvelous. (And the audience was among the quietest I've heard at any concert in recent memory.)

Du hattest Recht. (Der Moderator erwähnte eine „schwüle Nacht“ in London.) Eine unglaubliche Darbietung beider Musiker. 🌿
