To me, this means basically the Rutschman package + Franklin Arias, who could have been the Nats’ Opening Day shortstop. I would have done it. That said, the glass half-full view is that Toboni believes he can field a playoff team next year without trading Abrams. More signs pointing to spending.

Rutschman is injured, wasn’t playing well when he was healthy, is not a great fit for Fenway, is a free agent after next season, and he just brought back three of Boston’s top five prospects. And yes, the O’s no longer need him. But if I’m Toboni, I’m at least calling other GMs back about Abrams.

I realize fans don’t get a say in player trades, but it was funny to see Brewers Reddit declare that their sixth-best prospect was untouchable. Is there a cost to going for it? Sure. A desolate farm system partly explains the 2021-2026 Nationals seasons. But eventually you have to do *something*.

The last time I saw something that cost a lot get flipped this quickly for a loss, was during the tail end of the NFT craze a few years ago.

I don’t like the Nationals making deals with the Phillies, but if I’d know they had a guy named Spikerman they were willing to trade, I’d have made an exception. I’m not sure what lost potential bums me out more: a Nationals Spikerman jersey or a Marvel Day “Amazing Spiker-Man” bobblehead.

Yup. Also, seeing some of the reactions, I think people might have had unrealistic trade return expectations for a guy who was reportedly almost non-tendered last offseason. Getting four RPs may not be the sexiest trade package…unless you really, really, really, really, really, REALLY need RPs.

Compare this to the return from the Gore trade. When no one knew what the Nats’ competitive window would be, Toboni traded for kids. Ortiz may be the only one who debuts before 2028 or 2029. This trade is designed to compete next year. Who knows, maybe Mark is signaling that he’s ready to spend.

In his last appearance with the Yankees, Jake Bird gave up five runs in .1 IP. Dude was born to be a Washington Nationals reliever.
