Nobody wants to live in this awful present, so everyone is either living in the future ("If we can just make it to the midterms") or the past ("If only the voters had chosen differently"). No one wants to confront the real problem, that Democrats don't know how to win, because it seems unfixable.

It's not reaching - popular slang in general is very often coopted from black and queer communities, and it's even more prevalent on the internet. You can easily verify this yourself by looking up the origins of basically any popular colloquialism. I think this is fairly common knowledge.
