I understand the desire. But financial reality of the decisionmaking: ⚫ Fix fencing = $XX millions, 3+ years, & fit w/in capital budget 2-3 years out ⚫ Add lanes = tens millions $ more, add fed reviews & push project into capital budget out years (which can get pushed back further)

That was before my time! But for the current project, the focus was always on solely on raising the railing and getting it done as quickly as possible (which still took a few years).

The best are the soeakerphone conversations while someone is in a toilet stall in a public bathroom. Clearly a sign of the downward gallop of civilization.

From my perspective, cost was main factor (especially to prevent project from being pushed back to the dreaded “out years” of capital plan), followed by need to expedite completion. I didn’t attend many public meetings, but I don’t recall expanding the roadway as being an issue that came up. 

I also don’t get people who FaceTime in public while walking.

I’m amazed at how many fig trees there are in DC. Growing up in NY, you could always find the Mediterranean immigrant families b/c they’d bundle up fig trees for the winter as if it was a newborn child. Meanwhile here, they are left to grow in the wild and thrive. I blame bike lanes.
