It’s time we stopped accepting statements every time this happens and had a full public inquiry into why our police forces have always got something better to do than saving the lives of women. We’ve rightly had them for Southport and Nottingham but not for the longest crime wave in history.

I’m afraid the sexual assault loophole was an obvious flaw. It would be better to work from coherent principles. Harming a child or vulnerable adult, absolutely no early release. Physical, sexual + domestic offences against women, killing or sexual offences against anyone, no new shortening.
