But that only makes it more difficult to recoup public investment, which not only relies on repayment mechanisms diverted from dining and entertainment options elsewhere in the city, but tax dollars that deferred from local services.

Looking at Moda Center and Portland specifically, the "market rate" comps swing wildly. It looks like Dundon's team latched onto OKC, Memphis, Orlando, and SLC, where the publicly funded portion tilted more toward "you should be grateful we're here."

Was worth being in on this for @jcbradbury.com 's comparisons to other projects alone, but also as a reminder that he and @victor-matheson.bsky.social regularly do this to remind taxpayers that there are absolute truths of arena and stadium funding that don't change by market.

Excellent reality check. I think it's legit to argue that having the Blazers here has real cultural and vibes value (the Oregonian editorial board did just this), but the fiscal case is marginal at best.

The public city council meeting on the Moda Center term sheet featured a wide range of perspectives. These are a few perspectives from those advising a better deal for the city.

Moda term sheet. Today, I filed Morillo 1, an amendment that will require a comprehensive public analysis of every proposed funding source, its tradeoffs, and its public benefit before any final Council vote on the Moda Center agreement. www.portland.gov/sites/defaul...

The Moda Center debacle is especially interesting today. It highlights the realities of living in a world in need of unlimited climate resiliency investments as the wealthy escape paying for any of it. A recipe for losing stuff we love. It starts with the forests, but homes, food, sports all go too.

Overall, Portlanders have been mostly split between support of the Moda renovation and opposition for any public funding going toward the project (similar to our polling results).

So grateful for all the Portlanders committed to old school "live tweeting" of city council meetings but especially today's Moda center agenda. On a plane, unreliable wifi, but grateful for all your updates!

Portland is a union town! Everyone who works inside and outside the Moda center deserves a good, union job that pays a living wage! This deal has to center workers there and the wider community. #Economicjustice

Kate Lieber telling people that the legislature didn't even consider the need for private investment is the clearest tell that the fix was in

Nick

the sports Oregon guy saying this is a "process none of us asked for" is pretty cynical. Actually, the corporate insiders absolutely wanted this process. They coordinated it during "Project Mt. Hood". They just thought it was going to get the hundreds of millions out without friction.

As of now we have received 138 pieces of written testimony. Of that 71 submissions are opposed to the term sheet, 46 in support, with 21 registering support with changes. Lot of nuance in the comments and I’m reading each them, along with verbal testimony.

We’re hearing testimony on the Moda term sheet today. I have filed an amendment that seeks to do two broad things: 1. empower the Joint Authority to limit expenditure public funds in the public interest with transparency and accountability 2. Reduce City’s commitment from $400M -> $120MM

I think Keith Wilson and leadership in the Oregon legislature screwed the Portland City Council by leading the Blazers to believe this was all a done deal without including *any* input from city councilors.
