It's pretty disappointing that Ian Karmel seems to care more about the Blazers than he does Portland. He's allowed to have his opinions, and I'm allowed to think it sucks.

Got the chance to read this with my coffee this morning, and it's really important. As this meticulous chronology and clear-eyed analysis shows, @ripcitynotripoff.bsky.social has provided an enormous public benefit over these last months - for Portland and every NBA city, current and future.

As a lifetime Blazers fan, I remain confused by the approach to *gestures* all of this. Why wouldn't we want public tax dollars invested in the stadium to bring the most public ROI possible? Why would we expect a public body to start by negotiating against itself? Idk, idgi.

In our system of government, the executive branch's role is to negotiate proposed deals & the legislative branch's role is to consider approving them. For that to work, the executive should be proposing things the legislature can get behind. Don't lobby us, listen to us. Pretty basic stuff.

It’s wild that Keith Wilson is going to successfully pull a fast one on Portland City Council after absolutely failing on his promise to end unsheltered homelessness (which would have made these negotiations easier).

idk about y’all but if I needed to negotiate a financial deal with a guy known for his fortune built from predatory loans, I’d want to make sure the terms guiding our negotiation were maximally tilted in his favor and I’d hire one of the few guys known for fumbling similar deals in the region

We want a good deal that workers and the greater Portland community can be proud of. We respect you so we must to give it to you straight. Judicious electeds on Council need your help to fight for a deal that doesn’t bust a City budget that every one of us relies on.

Yesterday, I introduced an amendment requiring a simple reporting process before making a binding financial commitment: show where the money comes from, what Portlanders give up to pay for it, and what the public gets in return.

Nationwide, people are screaming at elected leaders at all levels of government to fight for them. Fight for our rights, fight for our future, fight for the things that we need to survive and thrive. Last night, more than half the city council decided the expedient move was to roll over.
