It's pretty disappointing that Ian Karmel seems to care more about the Blazers than he does Portland. He's allowed to have his opinions, and I'm allowed to think it sucks.

Just when you think it can’t get any more insane.

Portlanders and PNW people! There's a street fair today at Clinton Street and 25th, raising money for the bail fund! There will be vendors, music and a raffle from 1-5 PM PST!

#OtD 8 Aug 1927 the @IWW union attempted a national general strike against the executions of anarchist workers Sacco and Vanzetti. It was particularly strong in Colorado coalmines, where the stoppage lasted for two days stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1077...

I do take a lot of civic pride in our fair city seeing a dying mall and seizing it as a common space for art, expression, and community. We don’t miss Hollister. We miss each other!

Got the chance to read this with my coffee this morning, and it's really important. As this meticulous chronology and clear-eyed analysis shows, @ripcitynotripoff.bsky.social has provided an enormous public benefit over these last months - for Portland and every NBA city, current and future.

Rip City Not Rip Off

This is my final word on the Moda Center saga. This Wednesday, the vote to spend $1.1B of taxpayer funds is going to pass. If you think you ever had a say in the matter, you were lied to. Everyone got what they wanted in the end. Everyone but you. www.ripcitynotripoff.com/everyone-but...

As a lifetime Blazers fan, I remain confused by the approach to *gestures* all of this. Why wouldn't we want public tax dollars invested in the stadium to bring the most public ROI possible? Why would we expect a public body to start by negotiating against itself? Idk, idgi.

In our system of government, the executive branch's role is to negotiate proposed deals & the legislative branch's role is to consider approving them. For that to work, the executive should be proposing things the legislature can get behind. Don't lobby us, listen to us. Pretty basic stuff.

How cool is it that I live in a city where I get to go on an all day tour of our city's Watershed with other community members. Offered by the water bureau. THIS is the Portland you are completely missing, Tom Dundon, @mayorkwilson.bsky.social , & those who want to pay the Blazers blackmail.

It’s wild that Keith Wilson is going to successfully pull a fast one on Portland City Council after absolutely failing on his promise to end unsheltered homelessness (which would have made these negotiations easier).

idk about y’all but if I needed to negotiate a financial deal with a guy known for his fortune built from predatory loans, I’d want to make sure the terms guiding our negotiation were maximally tilted in his favor and I’d hire one of the few guys known for fumbling similar deals in the region

I don’t want working people dreaming within the boundaries somebody else created for us. Imagine more. Demand more. Build more.

“I’m sorry, did I mishear?” Moyer asked when Vega Pederson first shared his name Thursday. “We hired a negotiator that’s on the board of an organization that is lobbying us on this issue? How is that not a wild conflict of interest?”

A shocking mtg Many councilors refusing to even *consider* term sheet amendments (like below) that would better protect Portlanders, require a breakdown of how $120M+ in public funds would be used, or analyze impact of Moda Center funding on other city services All voted down without discussion

Councilor Candace Avalos

First amendment being introduced: Green Avalos 1. The amendment addresses two elements of the term sheet that are intended to bring the term-sheet to a position that provides more protection for tax payers while moving the process forward towards a fair deal.

We want a good deal that workers and the greater Portland community can be proud of. We respect you so we must to give it to you straight. Judicious electeds on Council need your help to fight for a deal that doesn’t bust a City budget that every one of us relies on.

I have just woken up early and composed a set of emails to those councilors abdicating their fiscal responsibility and hamstringing our town. #PDX you've got to do the same, pretty please

Mitch Green

My amendment with @counciloravalos.bsky.social to limit the City’s commitment to $120M instead of $395M given that we have exactly zero details about what our dollars will fund just failed 5-7. Had the amendment passed we could have used the Spectator Fund to bond for the $120M. Now we can’t.

We now know how to expedite permitting in Portland.

Yesterday, I introduced an amendment requiring a simple reporting process before making a binding financial commitment: show where the money comes from, what Portlanders give up to pay for it, and what the public gets in return.

Willamette Week

The Portland City Council on Thursday evening moved toward approving a non-binding term sheet for the Moda Center renovation that would propose the city contribute $120 million for renovation costs in exchange for a lease keeping the Trail Blazers in town for at least 20 years.

Nationwide, people are screaming at elected leaders at all levels of government to fight for them. Fight for our rights, fight for our future, fight for the things that we need to survive and thrive. Last night, more than half the city council decided the expedient move was to roll over.
