It’s absolutely true. The first, second, and third thing I’m looking for in the candidates I’m voting for in next week’s MI primary is how they speak to fighting this administration’s authoritarianism. I would vote for a fighting never-Trump like Kristol over a feckless pro-MFA lefty Dem.

And that’s fair. But to the extent we’ve been raised on and internalized the fiction that I’d you work hard you’ll be rewarded and if you go to college you’ll get a good job and buy a house, etc. then the reality of things hits and it’s now worse than the world you believed had existed.

So, when we now see how big the pay gaps are, or the widespread lack of access to basics, or how much corruption and being a soulless asshole is rewarded financially, etc. it all feels like things are getting worse than when we had less awareness of those issues.

Theory I’ve been considering is that it’s at least in part due to more widespread awareness about the parts of the economy that don’t work (even if directionally better than past) and that our collective new awareness of those issues shows up in it feeling worse than when we were more ignorant.
