University maths teacher (failed academic); very amateur local history; slightly worse photography. Not always very neurotypical. Uaireannan beagan Gàidhlig cuideachd. Same handle on the elephant site. Web: http://www.dominie.scot.

You know, I have no idea. *scribbles another note on the massive list of side projects to side projects to side projects*

I now want an early-1800s version of Taggart in which the nascent police force is entirely concerned with flowerpot-based crimes. "There's been a planter."

No wonder the oligarchs become obsessed with pervert glasses or space colonies, when they're already living an existence that's constantly surveilled and chained by money. No wonder they forget what freedom — constrained, messy, human freedom — is.

Ah — I wondered if that might be the case! (Several Yuills above it on the same page.)

If I were being really cynical, I'd say that it was a very convenient academic culture for a certain type of professor, who then wouldn't need to worry about plagiarism and could wave every essay through with a bland air of of-course-I-knew-that...

IME there are definitely big cultural differences in what's regarded as plagiarism, which does not help...

Somehow "but can we make it more like, you know, a gun?" seems a very USian approach to the problem.

Almost certainly was, I'd say — there's nothing much else that looks like that! It took me years to get into the habit of looking in the right place, but now I spot them quite often. (Today was a record, though.)

More seriously, the Cart is a wonderful wee river to live near. It wasn't until Covid that I really started to explore it properly, and now I have my own collection of favourite corners.

The real question is, perhaps, what the kingfishers are reading. (I would hazard a guess that it's connected with fish.)

The final one of today's sightings was indeed there!

(Bermaline was a fortified loaf marketed as aiding strength, energy, nourishment and digestion; Berina an infant food supplement of obscure composition. The HQ for both products was on Bothwell Street.) Advertise, or go under.

With support from the North Parish Washing Green Society emblem, I see...

I am: beyond red/green, though it's red/green that usually catches me out. On the basis that Mordor Central is clearly a 1960s psychology experiment that escaped from the lab, _of course_ they will still have flickering lighting.

I mean, on the plus side a lot of travellers ought now to be able to relate to my experience of trying to navigate a colour-coded world. On the minus side: aargh.

130

... so they colour-coded it and DIDN'T EVEN COLOUR-CODE IT? hahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAsobsobsobsobsob

It's simultaneously seen as abnormal (not the kind of thing _I_ would ever do) and normal (if I don't do it, am I being left behind), and I think that explains at least some of the Very Bad Takes currently sloshing around this website.

I suspect that a lot of the grotesques are post-WW2: the Dom didn't get flattened like so much of the city, but it did suffer a lot of damage. (I approve of the gradual updating of grotesques and gargoyles: it's in the anarchic spirit of the originals and it's fun.)

And both the Hohenzollernbruecke and its predecessor were built precisely on the axis of the uncompleted cathedral. It's basically a ritual landscape for Christian railway buffs (which is at least 50% of ministers in my experience).
