The EU may examine the efforts of Russian actors all it wants - I don't expect it to do anything that will address the problem - but ignoring the obvious, blatant, and direct information threat from the US techno-oligarchy is something much graver than simple ignorance on the EU's part. 4/4

Now, I'm telling you this as a person who has studied Russian information warfare for more than ten years: none of the Russian disinformation campaigns linked to the Ceuta crisis can possibly reach the impact of one techno-oligarch spreading right-wing disinformation on the platform he owns. 3/4

That is a devastating paradox for the Kremlin, probably without Putin and his allies acknowledging it: the very argument used to justify denying Ukraine’s separate existence concedes that Ukraine possesses the power to shape Russia’s future. 6/7

Indeed, in this respect, Russia emerges as the principal country within Ukraine’s sphere of influence. 5/7

Ironically, however - and this point has yet to be clearly articulated - Putin’s fear of a Westernised Ukraine as a “bad lesson” implicitly acknowledges that Ukraine itself possesses a sphere of influence extending beyond its borders. 4/7

From this perspective, pulling Ukraine back into Russia’s sphere of influence serves a dual purpose: it halts Ukraine’s Westernisation while removing what the Kremlin sees as a civilisational challenge to Russia. 3/7

If Ukraine were to prosper as part of the West, Russians might begin demanding the same future, thereby challenging both the Putin regime and its insistence on the uniqueness of “Russian civilisation”. 2/7
