A friend recently saw the anime Perfect Blue for the first time, and it really is prescient about it fingers the idea of celebrity as a kind of parasocial identity which can come to consume your real identity. Paging Baudrillard again! The sign becomes the signified (but with people).

It raises a lot of questions -- how do you escape your parasocial shadow once it has begun to consume your real identity? Particularly when there is a kind of ... hyperstitial cult... boosting the signal on the fake you, ably assisted by the low-friction technology we are surrounded by.
