The giant white sturgeon of the Fraser River in Canada

Обсуждение

Ответы

One creature I had nightmares about as a kid. Actually quite beautiful and interesting.

What a monster!

😱

Fact checking reveals these are real: -A protected species requiring special licensing and catch and release procedures -Biggest one caught and measured was over 11 ft long -100-140 year lifespan -They are not the ogopogo as that's a lake cryptid but could've been mistaken for a lost one.

Awesome! Do they have an idea on the age?

Ответ для DeEtte

Something that size is probably over a hundred years old. They grow slow, they're a very primitive fish.

When John Smith arrived in Virginia in the 1600’s, he said that the James River was so full of sturgeon that you could almost walk across it on their backs. The Native American boys would ride on their backs to show their courage and skill. Not like that anymore.

Sturgeon are amazing fish. Look at the size of that one! Probably 150 yrs old.

Thought Sturgeons always stayed at the bottom? Unique to have that swimming on the surface..

No mystery why people have believed in sea serpents....

😳

I live in a little river town in Illinois and smoked sturgeon is a treat and hard to find. Of course, it's the shovelnose sturgeon, but still heavily regulated. It's right around $14/lb.

😮

Caviar

wwwwwwwtf Nightmare fuel like this is what keeps me out of large bodies of water and those in which I cannot see everything around me, clear as day. 😭😭😭😭😭

Yowzers!

Its a for real sea monster!

Looks scary.

You sure it’s not the Loch Ness Monster?

It's a biggun and the species that should it end up on the end of your line you release it immediately.

Its Nessie... the Loch Ness Monster...

Are you sure it isn't Nessy?

Holy crap!

Graceful and Awe inspiring...Be grateful & respectful of Natura -she is so very Creative.

Don’t mention the locations! You’ll only gonna make them go there!

Wow

Thank goodness they r protected. They were almost fished to Extinction at one point I believe

Ответ для carylma33

Humans are awful.

Ответ для carylma33

Yes, mostly in Europe/Russia/Persia for their caviar. It used to be expensive because it was hard to ship it fresh, but now it’s expensive because Sturgeon is endangered. The meat was overlooked.

So cool. They can be 1000 pounds and live a long time.

That's a beast. 😱

Oh. Wow.

These giant prehistoric fish that swam alongside dinosaurs are so cool! And we are lucky to live alongside them, who witnessed dinosaurs firsthand.

Chile a fish that outlived the dinosaurs and I can't keep a plant alive. Respect

Ответ для Chuck Macklin

As ancient as this species is, I'm pretty sure this particular fish didn't witness any dinosaurs firsthand.

Leave him be...

Looks like Nessie emigrated!

That's one big fish!

Nelly!

That's a dinosaur.

Ответ для Grampa Jody

Close, same era though.

Ответ для Grampa Jody

It's a relative 🇨🇦

Carquinez Strait sturgeon are no joke.

Wow !!! 😮…. Beautiful 🤩

Let's go noodling

Darn, how large is that fish?

...and some asshole will kill it to mount it, for on his wall in the basement bar. We have Sturgeon spear fishing here. It irks me to no end too. Let them grow!

A literal prehistoric monster

No wonder there is a Sturgeon Moon!

Clearly the Lochness Monster!

W🤔W❣️

Ok that is a sea monster

WOW

Don't fnck with Canada! We have hockey sticks & enormous goddamn dinosaur fish & we know how to use both. ...just saying. (I'm not even getting into the white murder bears) 🤷

Polarbear SpacemanALT: Polarbear Spacemanstatic.klipy.com

I think I'm going to need a bigger hook...

Freaky story: 1970,The Indian Arm, BC w/two lines in, we snagged a sturgeon that spun our 40’ older wooden cris craft & dragged us a fair bit. Barely breaking the water surface we could see how truly immense it was before the line broke. They can get 20’ long here. Not the fish we were trying for 😳😳

Wdf is dat?!!

Omfg eeeekkkkk

Majestic AF.

WOW.

I’ve had one pull my 25’ boat upriver for a mile. At a good clip. Navy divers trying to recover a derailed train in the Columbia river gorge were too freaked out to go back in the water after seeing them. Absolutely awesome.

In my best Keanu Reeves voice; "WHOA!"

This fish is probably 150 years old!

You’re going to need a bigger boat!

Isn’t that the Loch Ness monster?

Holy sh*t! It’s the Loch Ness Monster!

Caviar for dayyyyyyys

Whoa! That things looks like the Loch ness monster!

Genuinely fascinating creatures.

Wow! huge.

Oh hell yeah! I live in Fl Alligators everywhere there is water. I was kyaking in a channel off CT river when I looked down and saw the long moving back of "something "! I panicked! The first ppl I saw I said there is something like an alligator back there! They smiled and said,"probably a sturgeon"

it is true?

Ответ для RiflessodiLuna

Yes. We have them in my state this size.

Nope!

Looks like Champ in Lake Champlain!

I didn't know we had sturgeon. Thanks. TIL.

Ответ для Eat the Technogarchs 🏴‍☠️🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦🇨🇦

I swear, this is why I'd rather swim in the ocean than a lake.

Ответ для Natasha

Afraid to know the answer but, do they eat people? Terrifying.

Ответ для cbte
Ответ для cbte

Nah they eat smaller fish and clams. Not aggressive to people though they're big enough to hurt you if you're trying to eat THEM

Ответ для cbte

Naw, they're very chill critters just minding their own business. You wanna stay away from the spiky bits on them though, they'll put a hurt on ya bigtime.

Amazing

Wow

Huh! So sea monster myths ARE real!

They are a protected fish here in B.C.🐟HANDS OFF!!

Awesome 😎

Y’all need to call that a relative of the Loch Ness Monster and just take our money!💰 😂

Those white barbs on its back are razor sharp. As a kid I watched my Mother catch one in the Klamath river in Northern California where we lived. As she was bringing it in it whipped around and hit her right leg. The cuts when healed left big scars.

When I was young they still had huge sturgeon in the Sacramento River. I had one just like that swim by our boat. It's an amazing sight.

Ответ для David Rommel

Was talking to a guy who worked as a diver for the gas company, inspecting pipelines at the bottom of the Sacramento. Springtime, river full of sediment, he thought he was standing on the bottom until it...moved. Flipped over and saw he'd been standing on a 10 ft sturgeon & freaked a little bit!

we have found Canadian nessie. holy crap

Damn!

Holy Smokes...now that's the lochness monster.

I can see why this might be one explanation of the Loch Ness Monster.

Cripes!

Wow!

Oh thank goodness. I thought this was Trump's newest addition to the Refecting pool.

Ответ для Amintegrity

Wouldn’t surprise me if they had access to sea monsters for that reflecting pool. Not with the monsters already in Washington. I’m not entirely sure the GOP is humans. Lizards maybe, but they are all the same cluster fuck of humanities mistake.

Ответ для Amintegrity

Shhhhh....he's so insane he just might. Someone posted he was contemplating putting alligators in it. Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Ответ для Amintegrity

Oh that was him swimming in the reflecting pool

Ответ для Amintegrity

They already have monsters to feed

Ответ для Amintegrity

Nah he hates endangered species

That’s big, but you should have seen the one I caught yesterday. I fought him for like 20 hours but you know…decided to let him go 🤣.

😳 eeeeeoooowwww 😳

That is some serious caviar unless I misunderstand how that works.

OMG !!! can one of you "beautiful humans" out there 💋 ..... verify if this is REAL ?????? I'm in "shock" 😲😲😲🤔🤔🤔

Ответ для OHNEETAZ

I live in Oregon and my son likes to fish--sturgeon are 100% real and yes, they get incredibly big. Record is 23' long and almost 3500 lbs, (7 meters/1580 kg) but that was a different species than this one.

Dinosaurs.

I don’t go near any river because I am scared what in it.

😱😱😱

Wow! Gonna need a huuuuge smoker, 10,000 bagels, and quite a bit of cream cheese! That is a big fish!

I think is what people see when they think they see their local version of the Loch Ness monster.

Nessy.

Ответ для foghornleghorn1357

That’s exactly what I thought!

Atlantic sturgeon found in ME and Maritimes rivers during mating season… up to 800lbs and 14-16’. And they jump!!! Watch your toes.

😲😲😲

Are you sure the Loch Ness monster hasn't relocated to Canada?

Nice try, but you can't fool me. That's not the Fraser River. It's Loch Ness. 😉

They look so prehistoric.. Jurassic Parkish…,.

Looks prehistoric as hell.

👀👀

D

WOW! That's a huge fish!

It’s Nessies cousin

Wow. Just wow.

Holy crap

That thing is like 100 years old

That is a big fucking fish

Wow! Magnificent! Makes me feel like this❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤍Sending you Love from the Archangels of the 7 Rays. Namaste, Sherri

That's a Dino fish...

😳

Is it edible?

Ответ для mrsampson

One that big is very protected--in Oregon you can only catch and keep if they're between 48-60 in long. The meat is absolutely incredible, firm, white and flavorful as all get out. Toss that in the smoker and you'll see god lol.

Loch Ness Sturgeon

i hope its protected and given room to live and not be bothered by people.

Ответ для Deadpool’s Unicorn

Oh yeah, sturgeon are very protected in the Pacific Northwest. You can fish for them but size limits are strictly enforced and you can pull jail time for keeping a too-big fish if fish & game catches you.

I'm sorry, that is a dragon.

I need reassurance: is this a one-off or are there many of them?

Ответ для Tray

Oh there are a bunch in the Fraser river, they are bottom feeders so not to worry. Unless you are dead on the bottom of the river.

😍 I used to take the kids out to the Sturgeon hatchery by Rooster Rock state Park…haha they had the one old huge Fella in his own private pool. 🥹😂

Ответ для Miaganga

Columbia River Gorge between Hood River and Portland. 👍 Drove by there many times on the way to Hood River.

A Nessie on this continent too! Awesome.

Nessie or her cousin?

If I saw that in the water I would shat myself....

😱

Massive!

Ooooggggg. So scary. I’m terrified of sturgeon.

Ответ для 🚫👑Is he dead yet?🚫👑

No reason to be, they're big but chill and completely uninterested in what the humans are up to. Those spiny bits on their backs can cut you up though, best to stay away from those parts.

😳

No way. 😮

Instead of fish-hunting them to extinction, why not train them to hunt submarines much like how the Russian’s trained beluga whales to do their underwater spying? BUT humanely ofcourse. (although there’s nothing humane about capturing, keeping them away from their wild habitat & under human control)

Ответ для Layered Sky

Here in BC you can only catch and release them. If you get caught killing them its a pretty heavy prison sentence. They are super protected here in Canada.

Ответ для Layered Sky

Belugas are cetaceans--mammals, and very intelligent. Sturgeon are fish, and extremely primitive ones at that. You can barely get one to acknowledge your existence, let alone mind you and they aren't trainable. They just out there being giant fish, freaking people out and eating.

You sure it's not the Lochness monster?

This one must have a death wish... usually they're elusive.

Loch Ness Monster is a giant sturgeon?

Ответ для JesusWasaLiberalDemocrat
Ответ для JesusWasaLiberalDemocrat

First thing I thought!

Either is an optical illusion or AI. A Sturgeon can't be this big...

Ответ для Offroad dreamer
Ответ для Offroad dreamer

I am amused how folks not from BC are assuming it’s AI, they get that big, you can see the head/gill opening remains consistent as well as the water movement. In our neighbouring province we also have a massive grizzly called the boss, he’s not AI either.

I was gonna say this isn't real, but then I remembered that the sturgeon was one of the biggest fish in Animal Crossing so I am more inclined to believe this 😅

And here I was planning on traveling to Canada to hike river trails...without a missile launcher...

Nessie?!!!

Alas these ancient fish may doomed if Carney's plans to boost shipping infrastructure and create a new terminal for oil tankers at Roberts Bank, the mouth of the mighty Fraser, goes ahead. So stupid focussing on fossil fuels when renewables are going such ground.

Ответ для Olivia Anderson

We humans suck. 🤬

Ответ для Olivia Anderson

Umm... You should pick an animal actually at risk here. These sturgeon live upriver and aren't going to be affected by a terminal at the estuary.

No! 😧

I can see someone taking this footage and trying to use it as “proof” of the existence of the Loch Ness monster.

How big?

11' long and 1000 lbs.

YIKES!

Nessie!

White sturgeon in the Fraser River grow to almost 12 feet. The largest one caught was 11'8" and weighed 1200 lbs. Beluga Sturgeon can get much larger - 23' and 3500lbs. Both are very impressive, ancient species.

We're going to need a bigger plate.

That would be crazy to see.

Wow! Massive! One was measured at 23 feet 7 inches weighing 3400 pounds. They can live 100 years and have been around for 200 million years. Amazing!

Amazing nature. Just don’t show it to Don Jr.; will be looking to kill it as a trophy.

Ответ для blue-at-birth

Ye-es cuz he’s a “sportsman” /s

Wow

From now on I will be swimming in my bathtub! 😱

Ответ для Serenity

They rarely attack humans. 😜

Wow. (= Move over, Loch Ness Monster!) 😎

if this was America, someone would immediately try to kill it.

Ответ для Gloomy Tennis

They have them in America too! Columbia river in Washington… heavily protected

Ответ для Gloomy Tennis

Sturgeon exist in the Great Lakes and St Lawrence regions, and a few states allow fishing in a very limited way. Michigan has a river named after Sturgeon. I'm not aware of any fish this size.

Ответ для Gloomy Tennis

Here’s the thing: sport hunting & fishing licenses are—by far—the biggest source of funding for conservation efforts in the US & in the world.

Ответ для Gloomy Tennis

The Missouri river has some huge sturgeon below some of the dams.

Ответ для Gloomy Tennis

That’s why I worry about Jimothy.

Ответ для Gloomy Tennis

Undoubtedly 😢

Ответ для Gloomy Tennis

Depends on the demographic.

Ответ для Gloomy Tennis

How awful for you to say that and for me to think it. It was my first thought when I witnessed the fish's magnificence.

Holy S**t! That sturgeon is GIANT!!! 😮😊

Wow its a monster!

Dang! Bigger than the rock bass in Tennessee.

The largest sturgeon ever caught was 24 feet long and weighed 3,463 pounds, making them the largest freshwater fish species in the world.

Dayum!!

Ответ для Bruce McMicking🇨🇦

Now thinking there was a Loch Ness monster makes sense.

Ответ для Bruce McMicking🇨🇦

OMG i figured this was AI!!

Leviathan.

Holy fuck that is terrifying!

Boyyyy, I’d love to go fly fishing for this monster…..🐟🎣….🤣😂. That is one big fish!

Ответ для Mike

Ha, fly fishing! Sturgeon poles are nearly 20 ft long and burly as hell--we call 'em "ugly sticks." Sturgeon will break anything smaller and never notice it happened.

The what? That's a whole ass sea monster

I had no idea!

Wow. It’s so huge. ✨

Incredible.

Nooo, this is the Lochness Monster!

Looking at living history 🤯

😮

😮

A living dinosaur.

Atleast 75-100 years old...

That's a frickin' leviathan!! So incredible, and a bit terrifying.

Those things just scare the crap out of me. One of the most prehistoric looking things left on the rarth.
