Riding bikes is 10X more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities. And that’s just the climate emissions. Doesn’t include the massive public & personal cost difference, the air & noise pollution difference, the massive space difference, etc, etc…Via @theconversation.bsky.social

My favourite bit about my commute this morning was being held up by an SUV that slowed down to a crawl over every speed bump & had to stop every time another SUV came in the opposite direction. Good job there were plenty of other overly large cars parked on either side of the road to take up space.

25Jul26 Cape Charles Va 23310 Kiptopeake State Park. Bike 10K a day it helps keep the doctors away 😀 👌 👍

Pain in the arse on the roads and footpaths.

👴 i'm old. retired. fixed income. balance is shot. when I can buy a multi speed cargo trike for under $500 I MIGHT consider purchasing one for grocery runs. since i'll be dead and gone before the end of the planet, it’s really not my problem.

And pure joy!

Biking isn't easy for a lot of people. It's a nice goal but let's be realistic.

I noticed this article was published in 2021. Have there been any recent studies that take into account the current situation, such as the accelerated adoption of solar, wind, and battery storage, as well as the development of sodium ion batteries.

Make your next EV an e-bike. You’ll be happier and the world will be a better place.

The fact people argue instead to put more computers and motors on everything hides the STATUS QUO METABOLIC SYNDROME I'M TOO LAZY TO GROW BAD APE CAR CULTURE PROBLEM. The only ideal to defend for the bulk of daily transportation in cities: HUMAN POWERED FROM TODDLER TO GRAVE (ceteris paribus).

It's a problem that will take MANY solutions. Promoting one over another is a fools errand. Until we have cities with population density and infrastructure that supports widespread bike use, we need to promote EVs as well.

Oooh, ta!

That should have been @ca.theconversation.com @us.theconversation.com @uk.theconversation.com, sorry.

@uk.theconversation.com to be precise. Thanks for sharing.

Good ideas always prevail. I always take heart when I see good ideas—despite all resistance—making inroads into areas where one wouldn't have expected them. Here is an excerpt from a job posting by a **tank** manufacturer: Additional benefits include a bike leasing and the "Deutschlandticket"

I was just saying this yesterday - but more in reference to reducing pollution from tyre and brake particles.

Yes bikes are good, but there is no "noise pollution" from electric cars.

Ответ для alliecee

There is.

Ответ для alliecee

At extremely low speeds such as what would be encountered in a parking lot, sure. Tire noise and air resistance noise become the dominant source of noise at higher speeds though. A lightweight ICE vehicle can actually be quieter than EVs above 60km/h just because tire noise scales with mass.

Ответ для alliecee

Yes there is.

An 89 year old relative gave up driving & bought a compact (30in/76cm wide) 500W e-assist trike. It's not allowed on sidewalks--even in places where it's too dangerous to ride on roads. If he bought a wider, heavier mobility scooter, he'd be allowed to ride it on sidewalks. Make it make sense.

@brenttoderian.bsky.social love seeing an article saying 'we have five years to change these behaviours' and then realising it's from 2021 and we did not, in fact, change these behaviours.

Check the news from Bordeaux. Or Madrid.

I went to Portland last year and almost exclusively used bikes to get around. The major downside is always having to wait for everyone else to arrive.

I am seeing so many more people biking here because the e-bikes make our hills less of an issue. and especially downtown, it's so much easier to go by bike. we can park anywhere! :)

bikes are only useful for short distances. And nobody really wants to ride a bike in the cold, wet, dark or heat

Ответ для Dinos Gonatas

I have an e-bike with an upgraded battery and I get 60 miles per full charge and that's with max pedal assist, you can actually go quite long distances on them. Also, the idea is to use your car LESS, not eliminate it.

Ответ для Dinos Gonatas

if we had biking infrastructure that protected bicyclists, I think people would ride more. I have been bike commuting on and off for a long time. once you figure out the gear you need for riding in the wet/dark, it's freeing and fun.

Cars are often needlessly used for on days with good weather over short distances that could easily be handled with a pollution free bike trip. Start there.

Here's a wild idea...what if everyone who biked/walked/took PT to work held a "take-your-car-to-work" day. It might give some of those anti-cycle-lane muppets something to think about while they are stuck in gridlocked traffic...

Ответ для Aunt Benjy 🇳🇿

What an evil, subversive idea :-D Especially in those places where many people use a bike for commuting, but actually have a car at home. Monthly Gridlock Day?

Cities planned around public transit is paramount. Bikes are suited more for last-mile connectivity, not as primary mode of travel

I am really hoping that an adult trike might work for me, once I have permanent housin 😊

Make that trickle electric or any inclines will be impossible to climb.

Time to build more BOD (Bike Oriented Development)

Ответ для Bryn Davidson - Lanefab

Hot bod.

Ответ для Bryn Davidson - Lanefab

In civilized countries, there are norms for the amount of cycle parking required in new housing projects. In other words, Bike Oriented Development is mandatory.

@sorayamartinezf.bsky.social

You know what I love about biking is how different your view of the city is from a bike instead of a car, it has really been a revelation for me in so many ways.

And it's orders of magnitude less damaging to a road surface.

Definitely a lot of chicken-and-egg here. Most of the roads in the U.S. are deeply hostile to cyclists, so a lot of us don't even bother to have bikes anymore. And with fewer people on bikes, there's less incentive to improve bike access :(

Too right. In and of themselves, EVs don't change the patently unsustainable one-car-per-person paradigm. They perpetuate it.

The bike lobby is predominantly white and male, with no understanding of the difficulties faced by single moms juggling work and their kids' school and extracurricular activities.

Ответ для Christine de Pisan

sadly, you’re often correct. it’s slowly changing, but aggressive and self righteous dudes have taken their toll on the bike movement over time. That said, I live in a bike family friendly neighborhood now, and it heartens me to see a lot of kids on cargo bikes with their parents and a bike bus!

Ответ для Christine de Pisan

since the age of 10-12, i usually took my own bike or went on my own on public transport to both school and extracurricular activities. giving children autonomy and freedom is another huge plus in addition to reducing the burden of moms who no longer need to drive their children everywhere

Ответ для Christine de Pisan

These days the "you have to be fit and fearless" lobby is fading because lots of evidence just points to infrastructure being key. "If you build it, they will come."

Bikes aren't safe or logical transportation for parents, usually moms, needing to drop their kids off at school and then rush to work.

Ответ для Christine de Pisan

They can be, if the infrastructure is there. In Bristol in the UK I see lots of parents on cargo bikes with children on the back (I have one too). If it's not safe for a parent with a child, it's not safe for anyone.

Ответ для Christine de Pisan

youtu.be/rQhzEnWCgHA way more fun for the children! also, as long as your town isn’t actively designed to be hostile to children, they can ride their own bikes to school from a pretty young age and they will love the freedom and independence it gives them!

I see parents taking their kids to daycare/school every day on cargo bikes, and they then ride on to work just because you don't want to/can't do it, does not mean that no one else can.

My e-bike achieves way over 100km/kWh. Compared to EVs at sub 5?

I’d be interested in cycling, but I’m not what one would call young, which leaves me scared to even try cycling lanes as ppl go so fast. I fell off my bike getting on it last year on a gravel road. #Embarrassing

Ответ для Carol❤️Cookies

Thought about a Pedelec?

Ответ для Carol❤️Cookies

It is a good idea to get comfortable riding before you go city traffic, especially in the US where drivers are not so used to cyclists

Ответ для Carol❤️Cookies

Check out local "access to cycling" groups? They offer confidence sessions, bike advice, friendly rides.

Ответ для Carol❤️Cookies

I got an e-bike a few years back and it is challenging to sort out how to safely ride the bike in the city, but it is possible! You have to treat it like when you were 16 and learning to drive a car, you'll make mistakes but you'll figure it out and get more confidence.

Ответ для Carol❤️Cookies

Ive been riding my bike instead of driving in my neighbourhood in the Montreal suburbs. It's a start.

Ответ для Carol❤️Cookies

Safety is a very important issue if we want to increase bicycle usage... most people are not comfortable having to deal with fast and aggressive car drivers in the same lane as them.

eBikes included?

Ответ для Steve

Always! You can tell cos it's already happening. Electric powered and assisted two and three wheelers are a global growth phenomenon.

I rode 1 to 2x a week in the burbs due to multi-use trails 17 of a 40 yr career. If I lived in the city and had a shorter commute, that rate would have been higher. Kudos to those who made the Philly Circuit Trails happen. Every urban/suburban region needs a trail system.
