from what I've read recently, the actual answer is that we're very bad at developing youth talent because we built a rudderless hodgepodge of rent-seekers and grifters who charge parents five figures a year for subpar trainers and scant opportunity to advance.

Just go for a rec league and don’t worry too much about it. More important just to play and have teammates and learn the game. House league games are fun, commitment is reasonable. The nice thing is that the worst attitudes (esp sideline parents) will have gone to the money leagues
