But, but Proust's In Search For Lost Time is Seven volumes ! Charlotte skipped one ! seems like she didn't deserve that award after all !

Ответ для geraud-b

She’s reading the Penguin Classics edition which is in six volumes.

@tomgauld.bsky.social I, for one, hope you might give some thought at some point to having an actual account on Mastodon, rather than one bridged from another entity, as is currently the case. I'm fairly certain that the style of humor expressed in your well-crafted and clever cartoons will be […]

Charlotte's wept...

Although older age group, one of my 2nd year or 3rd year classmates did similar. While pupils like me read and wrote a report on “Shane”, he did a Commando Comic. He got away w it for however many reading reports we did.

Prost!

Justice for Charlotte! (Apologies for being serious about your joke but: This is exactly why I decided to track days instead of books or time. And why I don't care if all you read was a cereal box. Summer Reading should be fun!)

That was a legit way to cheese the points system. They counted volumes separately but the longer books were SO not worth the effort for getting 40 points vs 10

When I had to deliver my reading list of English books for my secondary school's examinations, I asked if it were OK to combine Asimov's The Foundation's first 5 books into 1 item. My English teacher reacted 'OK! But 5? I thought there were only 3!". This was the end of 1982, and #6 was on its way.

There are only three Foundation books. And always will be.

Ответ для yellojkt

So I should throw away a dozen books or more because they are fake? Nah. I re-read them at least once a decade.

Goddam, that's hilarious. Let me give to you a favorite New Yorker cartoon about books....

Ответ для thepowerdroid

This is already great on the surface but I've never read Ulysses so this would be even funnier if that's like a massive chunk of the book

Ответ для Frances Foster Jerkin

It's just not a book you read to a child at bedtime, as so the child's comment is hilarious. PS, I have tried to read this book several times and failed.

And what about the seventh volume? Does it qualify as a separate work?

Ответ для Milan M. Horák

She’s reading the Penguin Classics version which is six volumes

There's only one way to go now, Charlotte. Kill them. Kill them all.

Killing the joke by saying that many library services count long/complex books as multiple books for the purposes of these things (at the discretion of staff).

Little Miss Cheated.

@tomgauld.bsky.social totally unfair

But can she summarize Proust in under 15 seconds?

Ответ для Désespérer

I can't say the title in under 15 seconds.

Ответ для Stephen Clarke

It’s actually really impressive at how much information about “À la recherche du temps perdu” that Michael Palin was able to slip out in that amount of time.

One of their best game show bits, along with Blackmail, Racism, and the Communist Football match.

la-la la la, la-la-la la-la-la

@tomgauld.bsky.social I remember having to get Special Dispensation for the kids to do their book reports on whatever 600 page book they were actually reading instead of the 100 page books they were assigned….

The adjudication committee is quite right.

That's how you get a supervillain.

Ответ для Sean Eric Fagan

Nah. That's how you get a librarian.

Ответ для Jim

Librarians can be supervillains!

Ответ для Sean Eric Fagan

“Can be”?? I love this be replaced in the records with “are as likely as not to be supervillains” I’ve never met a librarian who wasn’t one torn return away from launching their Villain-Era origin story.

Probably in one of the major European languages too, with latin script. Doubtful if it even counts.

Brilliant!

@tomgauld.bsky.social but Proust's 'Search' is seven volumes, no?

Ответ для Sven Vabar

@tomgauld.bsky.social :) Ok, fair enough

Dim teachers declared such a competition in a form class period in the library my comprehensive in the 80s. Predictable results. Perhaps they were trolling the clever kids? Decided I'd stick with the book I started but was eventually nagged into pretending to finish. Wish I'd stuck to my position.

Ответ для guilsfield

Consider that these kinds of initiatives might not be made for the benefit of "clever kids" who would be reading anyway, but instead to encourage reading among kids who otherwise might not.

Ответ для Z

I would hesitate to call this an initiative. We were being earehousedn a free period. Should reading or any other educational goal be gamified at all? Some of the teachers we had were a bit mad. We also had sock inspections

@tomgauld.bsky.social I literally had a conversation about this last week. We drove past a library where someone called Theo (if I remember correctly) was being congratulated for reading his 1000th book. I was impressed, but my driver pointed out that he might be reading kids picture books.

Ответ для Bodhipaksa

When I won the summer reading contest the librarians would quiz me randomly because 9 year olds don’t read 40 books in 6 weeks. And all I got was my picture in the newspaper.

"You'll laugh a lot with these little books!" >> "The real voyage of discovery consists, not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes"

Ответ для John Michael White

That was Proust? I thought it was from Event Horizon.

Ответ для (((Eddie)))

Actually from Mr. Tall.

Ответ для Steven Arden

Nah you’re both wrong, it’s actually from an old Specsavers ad

Ответ для Paul Blunt

"Look! Look with your new eyes!" "My discovery!"

Me: 'so that's 1001 nights (unexpurgated), 2 hardy boys, some fantasy novels, the encyclopedia of british sealife...' *Pause* 'oh you want more than just this week?'

Wonderful. A helpful life lesson for her!

U9s reading challenge - Proust v Mister Men 🤣👏 Nearly choked on my coffee but love it 🥰

Did Mr Tickle and Swann ever meet?

Roger Hargreaves books are the Madleine memory triggers for many people.

Oh, Charlotte. You still get your personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!

Justice For Charlotte.

Brilliant! So she's made up for lost time... She knows!

"Mistakenly thought Lisa Simpson was meant to me likeable" cartoon

The committee is correct.

Quality vs quantity. (as personally decided) The whole how many books you have read, which so many relish, even as adults, is the downside of these kinds of reading programs. No one cares how many books you have read. (image Astrid Schekels)
