Do we know the last date that entries will be removed from the roll?- that seems important information for the "check your details"/ "can't vote if not there" dynamic, since if one checks and is there, that is not for sure until after they stop removing people.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, I don't think there's likely to be any large-scale removal of people from the roll. And s98 provides for people to be restored at any time if mistakenly removed. I don't think this should affect the timing of updating your enrolment - earlier is always better.

So what happens if you find out on the day you have been removed? Will they let you file a special vote? I ask because I was removed from the roll last year despite not moving and having voted in all previous elections for 40+ years. We do need to know when they stop removing people.

I believe you can always file a special vote.

I think part of the cause for concern (unfounded or not) is the Electoral commission's wording is if you think you are on the roll you can cast a special, but it will only count if you are [present tense] on the roll, which on the surface doesn't seem to cover people who used to be on.

So raising the issue of whether incorrect removals from the roll are invalid (so you really are still there) or merely illicit (so you really aren't but should be)

The best thing to do is check and re-check beforehand online to ensure you're still on the roll. I've checked several times. Go to vote.nz
