A few years ago, I stopped looking for the best newspaper. Instead, I started building a media ecosystem where different outlets complement and challenge one another.

No serious news organization is completely free of blind spots. Each has its own editorial culture, priorities, audience and, to some extent, political outlook. Rather than pretending those differences don’t exist, I think it’s better to understand them.

For France, I regularly read Le Monde, Le Figaro and Mediapart. They’re all serious publications, but they often frame the same story differently. That’s a feature, not a bug.

Living in Québec, I also rely on La Presse, Le Devoir and Radio-Canada. Each fills a different role. Daily news, deeper analysis and public broadcasting together paint a richer picture than any single outlet could.

For a broader North American perspective, I also read The Globe and Mail, The Wall Street Journal and The Atlantic. Each excels in different areas, whether that’s Canadian affairs, business or long-form analysis.

For science, I recently added Popular Science. For sports, The Athletic. And I also listen to NHK World-Japan’s French-language news podcast because I like having at least one regular perspective from East Asia.

Newspapers are only part of the equation. I also listen to a lot of podcasts about history, science fiction, film and technology. I gravitate toward well-researched, thoughtful productions rather than shows built mostly around banter.

One thing I’ve learned is that trying to read everything is impossible. Reading widely is much more realistic. I’d rather read a handful of good articles from different perspectives than dozens saying essentially the same thing.

My media diet still has blind spots. It’s largely centered on Western democracies, and I’m always looking for ways to broaden it. But I think diversity of sources matters more than finding a mythical “perfect” news outlet.

The goal isn’t to collect newspapers from across the political spectrum. The goal is to understand the world through different journalistic cultures, editorial priorities and areas of expertise.

No single publication can tell the whole story. That’s why I believe a healthy media diet is built on thoughtful diversity, not on finding the “perfect” source. #Journalism #MediaLiteracy #News
