I am unreasonably annoyed that the new syllabus policy (and the advice of my college!) is basically that I have to split my perfectly complete and workable syllabus into two documents: a legalese abomination for the online database and a set of 'guidelines' that is actually functional and useful.

Every year my university rejects my request that they cover the cost of me getting "have you checked the syllabus?" tattooed across my forehead.

The two best syllabus approaches I have ever been given were polar opposites. One was when teaching intro Latin at a giant university: my supervisor sent me the syllabus and told me to replace the highlighted bits with the specific details for my section.

The other was when teaching two classes as an adjunct at Macalester: one their standard Geek Myth class (covering a sabbatical), the other an Ancient Comedy class I'd proposed. The syllabus requirement was "You should probably have a syllabus, yeah. You're a pro, do as you think best."

I hate it so much. As a side remark, the required language of "diverse scholarly perspectives" and "requirement of a reading does not imply endorsement" is completely ridiculous for science classes. I would absolutely *not* require students to read a physics textbook that I don't endorse!

Equally, I'd like to think that all of our students are intelligent enough to know that when I assign the Code of Hammurabi, it is not because I am endorsing Hammurabi's divine right to rule Babylon in the name of the god Anu, the Sublime, King of the Anunaki and Marduk the over-ruling son of Ea.

Other classes teach students critical thinking, so yours doesn't need to and can focus on transmission of knowledge.

"Why not put your whole old syllabus in the online system?" Because the online system comes with an explicit statement that the university - and not me - owns whatever I put into the online system. I'd be giving them the work I put into developing my own courses.

You could find out if anyone cares about the legalese abomination ... Wk 1 lecture: the geographical epistemology of parrots; native habitats, colonialization and appearance of parasols. Wk 1 precept: we will teach parrots how to hold parasols & move on to holding parasols while walking. KTL :)

Unfortunately the unstated reason for requiring this is to seek out thoughtcrime so they're gonna look at it.

It's a legal document. I've had to use it to protect myself when a teacher went off the rails one time. The part that seems shitty can become super important in some situations.
