I have often checked out a book from the library and then after reading it went out and bought my own copy so i could reread it whenever i wanted. Or loaned it to a friend.

This sounds like how Gen Z people give compliments. A Gen Z girl gonna apologize and hopes I don’t think she’s too weird for telling me my outfit looks gorgeous. Like when was it ever weird to say something nice to someone?

And authors get royalties from libraries. At least in Canada.

Had this discussion a few times on here, how important libraries are to us. My difficult mid teens were spent hanging out in a well stocked new town library, and it saved me. Telling this story, I heard from a Basildon librarian who’d been there at the time, tending an oasis in the desert.

You can build a relationship with your library, and some even request new suggestions for their collection. They are a cornerstone 3rd space.

I was in a library in Ontario, Canada, yesterday. There were adults and children crafting in a separate but connected space, toddlers sitting entranced as a story was read, books galore and industrious staff. It was a truly awe-inspiring amazingly hi-tech space and I loved every minute of it!

I get all my books at libraries these days, & mostly e-books:)

Just want to point out that there are about 125K libraries in the US, and it takes about 5-10K copies of a book sold to get on the NYT bestsellers list. So you patronizing a library still greatly helps the author.

Our local libraries are now mostly ‘collaboration’ spaces … what happened to all the books??? We used to have loads of history books, which have all been replaced by the few new and ‘better’ history books …. right ...

I use the library to try out new authors. I browse through books I would never try otherwise. And when I find an author I like, I add most of his/her bibliography to my christmas list. Libraries rock !

I used to take a wagon in the summer and bring 10 books home, at my elementary school. I would devour those and run back for more. I agree that libraries are a great love!!

I the 9th grade I would skip school and go to the library, pick out a book and read it.

I'm the queen of library use. (Anyone on a fixed income should love the library!) I often recommend to the library that they buy a book that isn't currently in their collection. They LOVE to get recommendations because they know those books will get read! I got them to acquire one earlier this year.

Also, people should remember that most libraries take purchase requests! If readers show an interest in a particular book, there's a good chance they'll get a copy! (I have asked my local library to acquire some of yours, hopefully they will follow through)

I think the only times when I’ve heard people feel bad about getting a book from the library, it was because a book snob scolded them for not buying it, which is absolute BS.

Truly! It's wonderful people can find our books in libraries. No apology necessary and nothing but love for our library system. May it flourish and expand!

The Philadelpha Free Library won’t let you attend author talks unless you buy a ticket that includes the book. So they flat out undermine the value of the library for a buck.

I think people think that libraries get books from other libraries and completely miss the idea that we had to buy the book so that we could have it to put on the shelf. And if a book gets high circulation numbers, were going to buy more of your books and put them on the shelves too.

I have nothing but contempt for libraries. They're run by petty little failed-managers who love office politics horseshit, and demand you submit to photo ID so the state can monitor all your book check-outs. Not to mention the selling out to cafe nonsense.

I am a lifelong library user. Sure, I have about a thousand books on my shelves, but I can no longer afford to buy each book I want to read. I read "Ring The Hill" from Libby, and I went on to purchase two more books by Tom Cox because I really want to have them with me.

A library is a solid sale. It's there for all kinds of folks to access it who may not be able to afford it, or for taking a chance on an author they aren't familiar with.

Always, always, always borrow books at the library! Authors get a small cut every time their books get checked out, and readers don’t pay a thing to read the book!

Thank god for libraries - a doorway to people finding authors they might not have encountered, falling in love with their work, and buying books to have of their own, give as gifts, etc.

My first self-published book scarcely moved on the open market. I donated copies to nearby public libraries. Wonderful response! Some of the libraries hosted my lectures and tours, and seeing folks enjoy the C&O Canal, NHP from a new angle is better than money!

The libraries buy the books and depending on the size of the library, more than one copy ! And I’m assuming they also pay for their ebook copies of which they can carry many copies of !! I’m thankful for our county’s library system !!

In Australia, writers get 5c every time someone borrows their book. We dream of getting on the library book club reading list!

Never, ever feel bad for borrowing or buying a book second hand, the author received payment in full one way or another and undoubtedly would cherish the knowledge that their work continues to spread and find love.

how do you feel about digital / shadow libraries?

I grew up in London and had library cards for two libraries as well as the school library. I loved reading (and still do).

I am 77. Currently (for quite a while) live in DK. In high school living in Lincoln, Mass. I used the town library. I borrowed Les Miserables. I borrowed Edgar Allan Poe's complete works and smuggled it into the house b/c my ma though it was too scary. I borrowed Dr. Doolittle. The list goes on.

This is a relief! Always feel kinda guilty abt getting books from a library v buying them

I can't remember how many new (to me) authors I have sampled in libraries whose books I have then ended up purchasing to keep. My librarians knew me and my tastes, they were always willing to point out works they thought I would.like. Libraries are where the magic happened for me.

My first few books I purposefully sent multiple copies to libraries in my area. I just want people to read.

Also, as an author, the library is a great place to write. Air conditioning in this summer heat, I can't get distracted by other things. UK authors have to register their work with ALCS and then you get a payout according to borrowing numbers.

I used to feel like that decades ago, when I'd find a cassette album by someone I knew in the used bins at thrift stores. I get it.

The way I've always thought about it is that a library still had to buy the book so I can read it. And if I love that book I'm going to read more from the author.

If our world does not have libraries, that is on us. We have to use them and support them.

Little neighborhood libraries (bring one take one) are all over Portland, and they're magical. If I was a writer I'd be thrilled to be found in one of those.

Yes, when you can, buy new books by authors you like. But when you get it from the library, the LIBRARY bought the book. That's good.

Exactly. Any good author will donate books for free to libraries and those in need. Ofcourse it's great if someone can afford to buy a book or reciprocate in some other way.

Libraries create communities.

That’s so weird like… we all started reading at libraries though. I don’t think people get that authors aren’t looking to be rich (it would be nice) they just want their work read.

One of the great services that libraries provide is interlibrary loans.

This is why I adore and respect those who write with passion. I once wanted to donate to libraries and staffing them in small towns - to ensure open interest in skills and education and hey just enjoying fantasy and empowerment too.

I often make my local library buy my books for me. Especially ones I think people really should read.
