An editor from the economist telling @olivia.science that nobody confidently understands the difference between the human cognitive capacity for language and a corpus. Idk about you, but to me (as a linguist and cognitive scientist) this is absolutely hilarious

Funny how "I don't understand" is "nobody understands". Reminds of: "supreme conviction that they are right, whatever they are pronouncing on and whether it falls within their domain of expertise or not, combined with a curious fragility when questioned in any way" newlinesmag.com/argument/the...

Yes, such libraries do indeed make you a harder target for authoritarianism. Authoritarianism loves the illiterate and the poorly educated. Get yourself a library card while you can.

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

Everytime you use your library card, you're starving the billionaire class 🙃

If only more university administrators would listen to students and faculty rather than impose the shiny new object that is genAI in them.

Matthew J Kuiper

Heck yes. A prof gave an assignment requiring genAI, and faced a mutiny. “The class…became tense as more students pushed back against [the genAI requirement]. They wanted to know what their classmates thought rather than what a LLM produced…they wanted to wrestle with…readings and complex ideas…”

Chess is a formal system. Language isn't. There's a huge difference between the rules of chess and language, which doesn't have a set of rules in the same way.

3 main take aways: (1) Scientific inference cannot be automated or proceduralized. (2) Not heeding the warning in (1) will necessarily limit our ability for scientific discovery and understanding. (3) The only way not to limit scientific discovery is to allow for unbounded pluralism. /end

“Ban AI use in the classroom for student assignments, in the same way we ban essay mills and other forms of plagiarism. Students must be protected from de-skilling and allowed space and time to perform their assignments themselves.” openletter.earth/open-letter-...

To answer the question we tell you a story. Meet Dr. Conjectura, the fictive cognitive scientist at the center of our story. They want to explain a (cognitive) system M at different levels of analysis. 3/

Requiring people to follow regulations (eg scientific integrity, legal, ethical) will effectively be a ban. The open letter is talking about banning at university and in the classroom for pedagogical / didactical reasons. Believe me, this is the opposite of lazy. bsky.app/profile/ethi...

Value- vs structure-approximability are *fully dissociable*. IOW, an output may be close to the optimal value, yet arbitrarily off in terms of structure, and vice versa, an output may be close to the required structure, yet arbitrarily off in terms of value. Illustrations in the figures. 20/🧵

One upshot is that it *really* matters what kind of approximation, with what kinds of guarantees (e.g., value, structure, how close), one is making claims about. One cannot just claim “this intractable f is approximable with this A_approx", without precise definitions and formal proof. 21/🧵

I see that @olivia.science already replied below but a colleague recently shared this paper (I think a different one than what she linked?) that seems relevant: osf.io/preprints/ps.... I think @mjcrockett.bsky.social has relevant work as well.

This tourney requires the use of a specific fairy condition that was invented by Japanese composer Hiroaki Maeshima. "Fairy" means that either the chess pieces are mythical creatures that have abnormal functions, or the board is enchanted in a specific way. Fairy pieces look like this ✨️🧚‍♂️
